Technological History. Archaeologists often divide the neolithic period, the latter part of what used to be called the Stone Age, into pre- and post ceramic, with reference to when ceramics came into production (88—92). Actually, there are occasions of pre-ceramic pyrotechnology, such as in the case of the fifth millenium BC mideastem plaster production (93). So far the eadiest occurrence of ceramics is in the 28th millenium BC in Eastern Europe, although here the technique was not used for the production of vessels but of figurines (94). [Pg.421]

Devastation caused by pests has troubled both ancient and modem humans often changing the course of history. The bubonic plague in Europe and the great potato famine in Ireland were both caused by pests. In 1884, grasshoppers caused such a food shortage in the midwestem United States that a national disaster was declared. [Pg.141]

In addition to these, some anthraquinone dyes and their intermediates are also produced in Eastern Europe, Russia, China, and Korea. As the result of the history of anthraquinone chemistry, most manufacturers are still located in Western Europe. Most former manufacturers in the United States abandoned the dyestuff business or were acquired by European companies by the middle of the 1980s. [Pg.341]

The indication for venom immunotherapy is based on a history of systemic allergic reactions to Hymenoptera stings and positive diagnostic tests, skin tests and/or venom-specific serum IgE antibodies [45, 49]. In the presence of only mild systemic allergic reactions, limited to the skin, immunotherapy is not generally recommended in the USA not for children, in Europe not for children and adults, unless they are heavily exposed and had repeated such reactions. [Pg.153]

Inherited deficiencies of the clotting system that result in bleeding are found in humans. The most common is deficiency of factor VIII, causing hemophilia A, an X chromosome-hnked disease that has played a major role in the history of the royal families of Europe. Hemophilia B is due to a deficiency of factor IX its clinical Feamres are almost identical to those of hemophilia A, but the conditions can be separated on the basis of specific assays that distinguish between the two factors. [Pg.604]

In addressing the issue of postglacial history of S. latifolia (or its progenitor), it is necessary to consider where it existed during the time when ice covered most of northern Europe. The species is not well adapted to survive in cold conditions (Thompson, 1973), which Mastenbroek (1983) pointed out, likely accounts for the absence of this species in the more northerly parts of Europe. He went on to say that even southern Europe may not have provided the necessary conditions for growth, and that the species may have occupied refugia in Northern Africa during maximum ice cover. This issue cannot be resolved on the basis of the data at hand. [Pg.36]

Since the first cases of AIDS were identified in 1981, over 25 million people have died as a result of HIV infection. This makes AIDS one of the most destructive epidemics in recorded history. The epidemic remains extremely dynamic, and no country in the world remains unaffected. It is estimated that HIV currently infects approximately 40 million people worldwide. Approximately 65% of these cases are in sub-Saharan Africa, with a prevalence of approximately 7%. East Asia, Central Asia, and Eastern Europe are also seeing rapidly rising infection rates. [Pg.1254]

A reassessment of Bacon s role in the history of alchemy, which has been exaggerated by many modern scholars. The author concludes that Bacon s formulation of the relationship between alchemy and the elixir and Christian morality and salvation is an important link between the ancient soteriological tradition of alchemy and the first blossoming of the Art in Europe during the 14th century"... [Pg.250]
