Ethylene-propylene-diene elastomer EPDM

The time accelerated aging method for electric wires and cables requires a high dose rate irradiation, but the exposure to polymer in air results only the oxidation of surface when the dose rate is higher. I previously reported the methodology study of time accelerated irradiation of elastomer (2). The study showed two appropriate methods, one was irradiation in pressurized oxygen at room temperature the other was irradiation at 70°C in air. The article studied the effect of higher dose (up to 10 MGy) irradiation on ethylene-propylene-diene elastomer (EPDM) by using the time accelerated method. Irradiation at 70°C in air was chosen as the time accelerated irradiation condition because of the experimental convenience. [Pg.71]

The Swiss company, WW Fischer, offers PTFE (Teflon PTFE or Hostaflon), PBT (Celanex, Crastin, Ultradur or Valox) or PEEK (Victrex) insulator material options in its 405 series of cylindrical connectors according to the requirements of working temperature and other criteria. Ethylene—Propylene Rubber. Ethylene and propjiene copolymerize to produce a wide range of elastomeric and thermoplastic products. Often a third monomer such dicyclopentadiene, hexadiene, or ethylene norbomene is incorporated at 2—12% into the polymer backbone and leads to the designation ethylene—propylene—diene monomer (EPDM) mbber (see Elastomers, synthetic-ethylene-propylene-diene rubber). The third monomer introduces sites of unsaturation that allow vulcanization by conventional sulfur cures. At high levels of third monomer it is possible to achieve cure rates that are equivalent to conventional mbbers such as SBR and PBD. Bhowmick and co-workers [168] investigated the bulk and surface modification of ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber and fluoro-elastomer by electron beam irradiation. The structure of the modified elastomers was analysed with the help of IR spectroscopy and XPS. The gel content, surface energy, friction coefficient and dynamic mechanical properties of bulk modified fluoro-elastomers and the surface-modified EPDMs were also measured.
