The most common nonionic surfactants are those based on ethylene oxide, referred to as ethoxylated surfactants. Several classes can be distinguished alcohol ethoxylates, alkyl phenol ethoxylates, fatty acid ethoxylates, sorbitan ester ethoxylates, fatty amine ethoxylates, and ethylene oxide-propylene oxide copolymers (sometimes referred to as polymer surfactants). Another important class of nonionics are the multihydroxy products such as glycol esters, glycerol (and polyglycerol) esters, glucosides (and polyglucosides), and sucrose esters. Amine oxides and sulfinyl surfactants represent nonionic with a small head group. [Pg.506]

Presence of impurities in excipients can have a dramatic influence on the safety, efficacy or stability of the drug product. Monomers or metal catalysts used during a polymerization process are toxic and can also destabilize the drug product if present in trace amounts. Due to safety concerns, the limit of vinyl chloride (monomer) in polyvinyl pyrrolidone is nmt 10 ppm, and for hydrazine (a side product of polymerization reaction) nmt 1 ppm. Monomeric ethylene oxide is highly toxic and can be present in ethoxylated excipients such as PEGs, ethoxylated fatty acids, etc. [Pg.1641]

Peel-off masks are applied in a uniform layer on the skin and upon drying and removal produce a sensation of skin tightness and cleansing action. Peel-off masks are marketed to consumers with normal, oily, combination, and acne-prone skin types. These masks are believed to perform the functions of skin exfoliation, hydration, and purification. They are based on plasticized polyvinyl alcohol. Hydrophilic emollients (e.g., ethoxylated fatty acid or alcohol derivatives, dimethicone copolyol) and humectants (e.g., glycerin, propylene glycol, sorbitol) are added to prevent moisture loss and cracking of polyvinyl alcohol film. The contribution of amino acids to the overall hydrophobicity of the protein is limited, compared to the contribution of a hydrophobic tail in classic surfactants, such as ethoxylated fatty acids. Therefore it can be expected that incorporation of long hydrocarbon chains will affect significantly the surface activity of the protein, as will be described in the following sections. [Pg.41]
