So far, we have discussed monomacrocyclic intra-annular acids, but bimacrocyclic concave benzoic acids [74a]-[74c] and [75] have also been synthesized and their acidities determined at 25°C by photometric measurements in ethanol (Wangnick, 1991). Table 17 compares the (ethanol) values. No general trend could be found for the acidity of concave benzoic acids [74] and [75]. While [75] with 3,5-disubstituted outer phenyl rings was slightly more acidic than benzoic or acetic acid, [74] with 2,6-disubstituted outer phenyl rings was much less acidic than the non-macrocyclic analogues. [Pg.89]

Catalyst manufacturers also define an effective solid density, determined by displacement of a given liquid (wster, ethanol). Values obtained with different liquids may vary substantially, depending on the extent to which the molecules of the liquid are able to penetrate into the pores of the catalyst. In a typical experiment 105 mg (0.50 mmol) of 3.8c, dissolved in a minimal amount of ethanol, and 100 mg (1.50 mmol) of 3.9 were added to a solution of 1.21g (5 mmol) of Cu(N03)2 BH20 and 5 mmol of ligand in 500 ml of water in a 500 ml flask. -Amino-acid containing solutions required addition of one equivalent of sodium hydroxide. Although a tremendous number of fermentation processes have been researched and developed to various extents, only a couple of hundred ate used commercially. Fermentation industries have continued to expand in terms of the number of new products on the market, the total volume (capacity), and the total sales value of the products. The early 1990s U.S. market for fermentation products was estimated to be in the 9-10 x 10 range. The total world market is probably three times that figure, and antibiotics continue to comprise a primary share of the industry. Other principal product categories are enzymes, several organic acids, baker s yeast, ethanol (qv), vitamins (qv), and steroid hormones (qv). [Pg.177]

Ethers, such as MTBE and methyl / fZ-amyl ether (TAME) are made by a catalytic process from methanol (qv) and the corresponding isomeric olefin. These ethers have excellent octane values and compete on an economic basis with alkylation for inclusion in gasoline. Another ether, ethyl tert-huty ether (ETBE) is made from ethanol (qv) and isobutylene (see Butylenes). The cost and economic driving forces to use ETBE vs MTBE or TAME ate a function of the raw material costs and any tax incentives that may be provided because of the ethanol that is used to produce it. [Pg.185]
