Culture cells in the presence of the chosen antibiotic for 10-14 days. Each passage should be performed at the highest dilution of cells at which growth occurs. If the contaminant is still detectable after this time, it is unlikely that the antibiotic used will prove successful, and another antibiotic should be tried. [Pg.50]

During the course of antibiotic treatment and also 5-7 days after treatment in the case of bacteria and fungi, and 25-30 days after treatment for mycoplasma-contaminated lines, re-test the culture by an appropriate method. Regular routine testing should, however, occur after this period. The antibiotic of choice used to eliminate any contaminant is dependent upon the sensitivity of the organism in question. Malaria affects an estimated 270 million people and causes 2—3 million deaths annually, approximately one million of which occur in children under the age of five. While primarily an affliction of the tropics and subtropics, it has occurred as far north as the Arctic Circle. The disease essentially has been eradicated in most temperate-zone countries, but some 1100 cases of malaria in U.S. citizens returning from abroad were reported to the Centers for Disease Control during 1990. Tissue Schizonticides. These eradicate the Hver stages of the parasite and thereby prevent their entry into the blood. As a class, therefore, they ate useful for prophylaxis. WEB DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) was the first chlorinated insecticide developed. It was used extensively in World War II to eradicate the mosquitoes that spread malaria. Its use was banned in the United States in 1978 because of environmental concerns. DDT is made up of carbon, hydrogen, and chlorine atoms.
