In the state Legislature, discussions on pesticides are no longer the solely vested interest of the agricultural committees. Discussions now occur in natural resource committees where most environmental legislation is discussed. This activity causes all points of an issue about pesticides to be analyzed. [Pg.544]

Some of the earliest environmental laws to incorporate pollution prevention were passed by state legislatures. States such as Massachusetts and New Jersey promulgated laws which instituted provisions for "toxic use reduction" in efforts to minimize the degree to which hazardous substances are employed at various stages of manufacturing, processing and use of chemical products (7),... [Pg.6]

A useful report has recently been produced by Dewhurst [66] on hazards associated with the use of this element in laboratories and there is an excellent monograph on the environmental mercury problem by D ltri [60]. The latter is the result of a study commissioned by the Michigan State Legislature of the potential hazard presented by mercury pollution in the Great Lakes of North America. This is probably the most comprehensive study that has been made of mercury, for it covers the historical uses of the metal, its dispersion in the environment and its epidemiology and toxicology. [Pg.26]
