Critical changes

The installation of fixed systems for down-hole geophysical measurements will permit a more refined monitoring of the environmental state of the sub-surface and the development of automatic alarm systems to ensure swift response in the event of critical changes in the quality of the sub-surface. The overall reduction of investigation time has led to the installation of a containment system about one year earlier than would have been possible, had a classical approach been employed. 

Lawn people are anxious. In recent years, the unicellular nature of planktonic algae has been exploited for the construction of whole-cell based biosensors capable of real-time response on critical change of the aquatic ecosystems caused by pollutant emissions. Most of the proposed devices are based on the electrochemical detection of the inhibiting effect on the photosynthetic activity of algae and cyanobacteria exerted by some toxicants.

Cruchaud [79] drew attention to the electric phenomena which accompany the shock and friction produced by the impact. Charging with static electricity is an important factor influencing the explosion according to this author. 

The discovery of appropriate starting points for the development of potent and specific inhibitors is stiU a challenge. In addition to the usual problems of low abundance and purity that enzymologists and structural biologists are generally faced wifh, lipases present a unique additional difficulty. Unlike other hydrolytic enzymes, e.g. esterases or proteases, the substrates hydrolyzed by lipases are insoluble in water and therefore must be efficiently presented to the enzyme in a separate lipidic phase. The presence of a suitable second phase apparently leads to increased lipase activity and may effect subtle but critical changes to the enzyme s three-dimensional structure.
