Environmental deficiencies

The earliest and potentially most damaging result of iodine deficiency is neonatal hypothyroidism and cretinism. The wide prevalence of cretinism in the Himalayan and sub-Himalayan belt has been shown by several authors, starting from the turn of the last century. Studies of iodine metabolism in the Himalayan goiter zones of India and Nepal (Karmarkar et ai, 1974) showed (a) markedly increased avidity of the thyroid to radioiodine (b) reduced excretion of stable iodine in urine (c) extremely low levels of iodine in the drinking water (d) normal or reduced protein-bound iodine in plasma and (e) low inorganic iodide concentration in plasma. These findings are compatible with the hypothesis that environmental deficiency of iodine is the primary factor responsible for endemic goiter in these areas. [Pg.1273]

Between 1985 and 1996, there has been a considerable consolidation in the alkylphenol industry with the shutting down of older, smaller, less efficient, and environmentally deficient plants. The current trend is to larger size, continuous, single-product plants for low-cost operation. Hence, there are currently fewer alkylphenol prodncers compared to 10 years ago. Overall capacity versus demand remains well balanced and an overall growth of 3-5% is foreseen over the next several years. Approximately 5% of the U.S. consumption of is in agriculture. Boron is a necessary trace nutrient for plants and is added in small quantities to a number of fertilizers. Borates are also used in crop sprays for fast rehef of boron deficiency. Borates, when apphed at relatively high concentration, act as nonselective herbicides. Small quantities of borates are used in the manufacture of alloys and refractories (qv). Molten borates readily dissolve other metal oxides usage as a flux in metallurgy is an important apphcation. Other important small volume apphcations for borates are in fire retardants for both plastics and ceUulosic materials, in hydrocarbon fuels for fungus control, and in automotive antifreeze for corrosion control (see Corrosion and corrosion inhibitors). Borates are used as neutron absorbers in nuclear reactors. Several borates, which are registered with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) can be used for insecticidal purposes, eg, TIM-BOR. [Pg.205]

Distortion Another problem with extrusions is caused by distortion of the section by the effect of heat and other environmental conditions such as exposure to water or chemical agents that tend to soften the plastic. These distortions are generally reversals of the profile back to the shape that it had exiting in the die. This action indicates that the post die forming operations were done at a lower than desirable temperature which results in a molded-in stress. When the stress is relieved the product distorts. In some instances these stresses cannot be eliminated by process changes so that the product is inherently deficient in performance. [Pg.282]

Beri-beri or clinically manifest thiamin deficiency exists in several subforms infantile beri-beri and adult beri-beri. Infantile beri-beri occurs in exclusively breastfed infants of thiamin-deficient mothers. Adults can develop different forms of the disease, depending on their constitution, environmental conditions, the relative contribution of other nutrients to the diet as well as the duration and severity of deficiency. First of all, there is a so called dry or atrophic (paralytic or nervous) form, including peripheral degenerative polyneuropathy, muscle weakness and paralysis. Second, a wet or exudative (cardiac) form exists. In this form, typical symptoms are lung and peripheral oedema as well as ascites. Finally, there is a cerebral form, that can occur as Wernicke encephalopathy or Korsakoff psychosis. Tli is latter form mostly affects chronic alcoholics with severe thiamin deficiency. [Pg.255]
