Environmental creation

Dating approximately from the creation of the U S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 1970... [Pg.644]

National Environmental Policy Act, 1969 The National Environmental Pohcy Act (NEPA) of 1969 was the first federal act that required coordination of federal projects and their impacts with the nation s resources. The act specified the creation of Council on Environmental Quahty in the Executive Office of the President. This body has the authority to force eveiy federal agency to submit to the council an environmental impact statement on eveiy activity or project which it may sponsor or over which it has jurisdic tion. [Pg.2162]

Since the first synthesis of ammonia, catalyst development and chemical reaction engineering have been instrumental in the creation of the chemical process industry. As a result, catalytic processes have contributed much to the realization of prosperous civilizaticm. In the future, catalytic processes are expected to fulfill important roles in petroleum refining, diemical processing and environmental preservation. However, at present, many catalytic processes discharge large amounts of byproducts and consume large amounts of auxiliary raw materials. [Pg.65]

The archiving of electronic data poses more specific challenges. GLP requires records retention and retrieval of archival records. Since software used for the creation of electronic records is upgraded at a rapid pace, the requirement of retrievable archived records can be difficult to comply with. Even when stored on electronic media, the records have to comply with the records retention period and be retrievable. The collection, storage, and retrieval of electronic records should address all GLP aspects, including environmental conditions to ensure the integrity of the media. [Pg.1029]

Promote pot-life, e.g. for PVC plastisols and isocyanate systems or catalysed UF and MUF core resins, avoiding loss of the resin and creation of environmental and disposal problems by extended interruptions in production. [Pg.783]

Creation of a new understanding how to make TES happen is crucial, hence the introduction of the correct economic and environmental instrument is the single most important factor controlling the sustainable growth of renewable technology, hence effective international collaboration and awareness have an increasingly important role. [Pg.98]

Capitalizing on self-assembly and nanoscience will enhance the ability to screen drugs for individual sensitivities. Advances in drug discovery, combinatorial synthesis, and screening with sensors that have the ability to detect multitudes of specific genetic matches—marrying microelectronics and self-assembly—are expected to be near-term breakthroughs. Then the creation of advanced forms of in the field or in the office tests for chemical risks, pharmaceutical compatibility, or environmental hazards will be possible. [Pg.141]

The critical load concept is intended to achieve the maximum economic benefit from the reduction of pollutant emissions since it takes into account the estimates of differing sensitivity of various ecosystems to acid deposition. Thus, this concept is considered to be an alternative to the more expensive BAT (Best Available Technologies) concept (Posch et al., 1996). Critical load calculations and mapping allow the creation of ecological-economic optimization models with a corresponding assessment of minimum financial investments for achieving maximum environmental protection. [Pg.8]

The creation, distribution and application of knowledge can be seen as a precondition for the environmental stress occurrence minimization and to preventing potential conflicts. [Pg.177]

Kenneth Johnson is a Senior Scientist at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute. His research interests are focused on the development of new analytical methods for chemicals in seawater and application of these tools to studies of chemical cycling throughout the ocean. His group has developed a variety of analytical methods for analyzing metals present at ultratrace concentrations in seawater. His expertise lies in trace metal analysis and instrumentation. The creation of reference materials to calibrate these instruments is important for the production of long-term, high-precision datasets. Dr. Johnson has participated on the NRC Committee on Marine Environmental Monitoring and the Marine Chemistry Study Panel. [Pg.127]

Silent Spring was immensely popular and influential. Carson s work almost single-handedly created modern society s fears about synthetic chemicals in the environment and, among other things, fostered renewed interest in the science of toxicology. It also helped pave the way for the introduction of several major federal environmental laws in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and for the creation of the EPA in 1970. [Pg.59]
