The process related to the paint shop does not impose a significant pollution load on the environment compared to many other industrial activities. It is, however, essential that all possible aspects of environmental pollution by wastewater, environmental hydrology, environmental hydraulics and pneumatics, air, solid waste, noise and hazardous wastes etc. are reviewed to control any kind of pollution within the prescribed limits. Otherwise subsequent tragedies, if caused by environmental negligence in the industrial processes, may lead to the formation of stricter environmental laws. [Pg.412]

Environmental laboratories use a great variety of analytical methods for different types of organic and inorganic pollutant determinations. In this chapter, we will review the main instrumental techniques, their applications, and limitations in the analyses of environmental matrices, while focusing on qualitative aspects of environmental analysis. [Pg.211]

In addition, some other aspects should also be addressed so that CE can be used as a routine method in this field. The most important points related to this include the development of new and better chiral selectors, detector devices, and addition of a cooling device in the CE apparatus. In addition, chiral capillaries should be developed and the CE device should be hyphenated with mass spectrometer, polarimetric, and circular dichroism detectors, which may result in good reproducibihty and improved limits of detection. The advancement of CE as a chiral analysis technique has not yet been fiilly explored and research in this direction is currently underway. In summary, there is much to be developed for the advancement of CE for the analysis of chiral pollutants. It is hoped that CE will be recognized as the technique of choice for chiral analysis of the environmental pollutants. [Pg.101]

Although chemistry leads to innumerable products that are widely used and valued by the public, these tend not to get commented on in the press. Rather, attention is focused on the things that go wrong, for example, when the use of such substances leads to pollution. A focus on environmental chemistry should redress the balance somewhat, for such material could be presented with a balance between positive and negative slants, and within contexts that are of current interest to individuals and communities. At the same time, newspapers seem more inclined to report an overall picture, than to point to the caveats that fiamed the original science. They are also accused of sensationafism, whereby specific aspects of stories are overstated, for example, the scientific certainty of what has been discovered or produced, the implications and apphcations of discoveries, the nature of any controversies involved and, lastly, perhaps most importantly, any risks involved. For these reasons, newspapers have a limited use in disseminating an awareness of chemical ideas, especially of the applications and implications associated with them. [Pg.246]

This Case Study has been concerned with acid rain, which is just one limited aspect of pollution. However, the lessons learned have important consequences for environmental protection more generally. Widespread appreciation of the damage that can be inflicted by lack of restrictions on waste disposal, and sulfur dioxide in flue gases in particular, have strongly influenced industrialists and politicians in alerting us all to the necessity for maintained vigilance, if we are not to suffer from the unexpected, unwelcome and often expensive consequences of our activities. [Pg.270]
