With hardware and software costs rapidly decreasing, that ratio became even worse. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are not able to pay consultants millions of dollars for implementation. Hence, architectures, methods, and tools have become increasingly popular because they can help reduce the cost of software implementation and at the same time increase user acceptance of standard software solutions.

Implementing enterprise software can be one of the most complex activities undertaken by a business. It is broadly regarded as high risk and fraught with potential problems. The horror stories of failed software projects are legion and the financial consequences have been punishing. In some cases these failures brought down a company. In other cases, the system was implemented but software problems caused multibillion-dollar losses. Even companies with world-renowned IT capabilities such as Nike, Hewlett-Packard, and Cisco can point to substantial software project related losses. 

But our reliance on enterprise software is total and, as we move toward a new model of business competition, our systems have a different role - supporting the multicompany environment. As we examine this expanded role, there is one key question to be answered how should we go about implementing enterprise software so that the mistakes of yesterday turn into the successes of tomorrow ... 

Putting these technologies together means that interoperability between systems is possible without the need for total integration. The bad news is that the process of implementing enterprise software is just as difficult as ever. 

The term system development life cycle is simply a generic expression for a system implementation process or methodology. Methodologies are central to implementing enterprise software, and every implementer has one. From a cultural perspective, the system development life cycle (SDLC) becomes a language that people within the organization can speak fluently. 

What do customers look for before they decide to adopt an ELN system The companies that are implementing ELN systems can be reasonably divided at this point into large enterprises and small companies. Large enterprises, by the nature of the complexity of their operations, are the major driving force behind many of the software architectural decisions behind well-designed ELN systems. 

These considerations are primarily enterprise-wide in scope. With integration being of primary importance to healthcare in general, it is still necessary to obtain best-of-class software solutions for specific pharmacy activities. Recommendations that will help select appropriate applications and technologies that are backed by reliable implementation, support, and services will be the focus of the remainder of this chapter. IS refers to the software packages and databases that provide the functionality to implement the business processes. These include such packages as Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), Electronic Document Management Systems (EDMS) and Maintenance Management Systems. 

These few examples already demonstrate that enterprise models play a major role in the success of e-business. Some software vendors, such as SAP and Oracle, have understood this development and are already implementing their first model-based e-business applications. 

This chapter presented an overview of ERP from the outside and from the inside. The outside view clarified the connection between ERP, electronic commerce, and supply chain management. The inside view describe the functional and implementation elements of ERP systems, particularly in the context of manufacturing enterprises, and identified the points at which ERP interacts wifli other software applications in manufacturing enterprises. Finally, we looked at open research problems surrounding ERP and identified those that are important to fitting ERP systems into current and future business processes.
