Engineers career paths

Once a chemist or chemical engineer has obtained his law degree, what does he do with it A number of different career paths are open to him. Perhaps the most traditional route would be to become a patent lawyer. Often, lawyers trained in chemistry first acquired the incentive for attending law school from exposure to patent lawyers, usually in a corporation environment. Frequently, such lawyers were actually inventors before they became lawyers.

For others, this will be the last formal course in chemistry that you will take. Regardless of the career path you plan to take— whether it is chemistry, one of the biomedical fields, engineering, the liberal arts, or another field we hope that this text has increased your appreciation of the chemistry in the world around you. If you pay attention, you will be aware of encounters with chemistry on a daily basis, from food and pharmaceutical labels to gasoline pumps, sports equipment to news reports. 

The purpose of this activity is to learn to think about the many ways in which automating routine tasks can simplify your life. Learning to think like an engineer is an important skill that will help you later in life no matter what career path you pursue. Engineers analyze problems or situations and then try to develop practical solutions. 

It was not that long ago that I was in the position that you are currently in, trying to decide what career path I wanted to pursue. Upon graduating with my Ph.D. in biomedical engineering, did I want to pursue a career in industry Was a career working at an intellectual property law firm for me Or did I want to pursue a career in academia The choices seemed endless and at times overwhelming, yet my decision to become a faculty member at a small teaching-focused university became the clear choice for me. 

The story does not end there nor does the career path straighten. I became a pediatrician, practiced for several years, cut back after having children, and now have returned to academic engineering as faculty. 

There are many alternative career paths for scientists and engineers. Why go into sales and marketing Two immediate answers a sales and marketing career can be tremendously rewarding and fun. Second, there is a tremendous need for qualified... 

I am very excited about this book. As a bioengineering educator, I am always looking for information that can provide guidance for students as they prepare for their careers. The contributors in this book are so enthusiastic about their careers that many of the chapters made we want to switch careers on the spot I believe that engineering students do not receive enough guidance about alternative career paths. The limited relevance given to research skills, on the other hand, should not come as a surprise, given the nature of engineering and the expected career path of most graduates, which will lie outside a research environment. Yet, the profession expects engineers to innovate, and innovation requires a certain degree of skill in carrying out research (Bock, 2001). 

There are many opportunities for technicians who benefit from grounding in the sciences. An associate s degree in science or applied science, or in an engineering field, is a very good basis for a flow reactor technician s career path. 

The design and development of media such as glass or plastic fibers for transmission is another career path in photonics. There is a need for engineers to develop new photonic crystals, photonic crystal fibers, and metal surfaces (nanoplasmonics).
