In this book, NMR is viewed from the perspective of imaging. NMR spectroscopy, relaxometry, and transport measurements are considered to be useful for defining image contrast. Clearly, such an approach is likely to be foreign to an NMR spectroscopist, who may consider NMR imaging a modification of multi-dimensional NMR. These different perspectives can be related to each other by considering the time dependence of the Larmor frequency (1.1.7).

We begin with a case history unlike those in most other texts about medical errors. In the case of CH, a person of our acquaintance, everything went well—in large part because she felt empowered to speak up at the right moment. 

On January 2, 2001, the patient entered the City of Hope Hospital in Duarte, California, for a bone marrow transplant. There she underwent eight days of treatment with a chemotherapy cocktail to kill her bone marrow. She was transfused with donated marrow on January 11, started on prednisone, and observed for graft versus host disease. She was discharged on February 28 and instructed to live within 15 minutes of the hospital.

My extended family has heard about this book—and no doubt wondered about alchemy—for many years. If you are a statistics student or a professional statistician, my advice would be to put this book down now You will probably find its dismissive attitude towards the mathematical basis of your trade extremely irritating. Indeed, if at least one traditional statistician does not complain bitterly about this book, I shall be rather disappointed. 

You will already have noticed something unusual about this book almost all of the chemical structures are shown in red. This is quite intentional emphatic red underlines the message that structures are more important than words in organic chemistry. But sometimes small parts of structures are in other colours here are two examples from p. 11, where we were talking about organic compounds containing elements other than C and H.
