This book is an evolutionary product Over the span of a decade, professors at major universities and liberal arts colleges have made suggestions for minor changes and improvements. I count myself fortunate to have used the forerunners, which have been published since 1973.

The notion of a broad liberal arts education goes back to the Greeks and Romans and has been at the center of the modem secular university. Engineering education has a somewhat shorter history, but the perception that engineering education is extremely narrow by comparison misses several key points ...

These are noble goals, and it is crucial that we do our best to achieve them. Judging from encounters with my former liberal arts students in the midst of their daily lives, however, I have come to conclude that this is not what they usually cherish most from having taken a course in chemistry. Rather, it is the personal development they experienced through the process.
