An important application of this type of analysis is in the determination of the calculated cetane index. The procedure is as follows the cetane number is measured using the standard CFR engine method for a large number of gas oil samples covering a wide range of chemical compositions. It was shown that this measured number is a linear combination of chemical family concentrations as determined by the D 2425 method. An example of the correlation obtained is given in Figure 3.3. [Pg.52]

These diagrams focus on the temporal or time relationships of operations and they can be used to solve resource allocation problems, to determine whether there is any potential for time stress, and to consider alternative work methods in the execution of a procedure. An example drawn from traditional industrial engineering methods is shown in Figure 4.7. The chart is used to analyze the interaction between people and equipment. As indicated in the summary portion of this chart, there is a high proportion of idle time which would probably indicate the use of alternative procedures in the execution of this task. The chart enables the analyst to see the relationships among the activities of the different components in planning such alternatives. [Pg.172]

However, like the scientific method, the engineering method is an interative process and embedded in the engineering method is the systematic use of the scientific method itself to predict behavior of a prototype device or process. This means both methods require the use of trial and error. The interdependency of irtiil and error was explained by someone who said. One cannot have trail and error without error. ... [Pg.368]

Any analysis of risk should recognize these distinctions in all of their essential features. A typical approach to acute risk separates the stochastic nature of discrete causal events from the deterministic consequences which are treated using engineering methods such as mathematical models. Another tool if risk analysis is a risk profile that graphs the probability of occurrence versus the severity of the consequences (e.g., probability, of a fish dying or probability of a person contracting liver cancer either as a result of exposure to a specified environmental contaminant). In a way, this profile shows the functional relationship between the probabilistic and the deterministic parts of the problem by showing probability versus consequences. [Pg.92]

Occasionally, cetane improvers are added to distillate fuel and are capable of increasing the cetane number of diesel fuel from 1 to 14 numbers. The reason for this range of response is due to the differences in the chemical nature of the fuel. Fuel containing a higher level of aromatic compounds will typically respond less effectively to cetane improver treatment than fuels with fewer aromatic compounds. Fuel cetane number determination is evaluated by a standardized engine method ASTMD-613. [Pg.195]
