Data from the EEA (2006c) reveal that air emissions from transport follow a slightly less expressed, but well comparable trend to entire emissions between 1990 and 2004. Table 19.2 shows the share for the transport sector of certain pollutants in the EU 40% to 50% of NO, and carbon monoxide (CO), 25% of non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOC) and just 1% of sulphur oxides (SO,). In developing countries, and here in particular in the big megacities, the share for transport of SO, heavy metal and particulate emissions (not listed here) will -because of the old vehicle fleets - be much higher.

Toxicology. 2-Ethyoxyethyl acetate (EEA) is irritating to the eyes, nose, and throat, and at high concentrations it causes central nervous system depression in chronic studies it is myelotoxic, spermatoxic, and teratogenic. 

A number of developmental toxicity studies have been conducted on EEA. In rabbits, inhalation exposure to 100-3 00 ppm resulted in maternal toxicity, including clinical signs and alterations in hematology (reduced hemoglobin). Developmental toxicity was seen as an increased incidence of totally resorbed litters above 2 00 ppm and an increase in non-viable fetuses at 3 00 ppm fetal ossification was observed above 100 ppm, and the incidence of total malformations was 100% at 300ppm. Similar effects were observed in rats, with maternal and developmental toxicity at 100-300 ppm and teratogenic effects at 200-300 ppm. 

Because EEA is well absorbed through the skin, ambient monitoring of environmental exposure levels is not considered to be an accurate method of determining absorbed dose. Biological monitoring of the EEA metabolite 2-ethoxyacetic acid in urine has been shown to be an effective indicator of absorbed dose in workers. Katritzky has published a few papers on the conformation of 1,2,4-trimethylhexahydro-(23) and l,2,3,4-tetramethylhexahydro-l,2,4-triazine (24). From studies on the photoelectron spectra of (23) it was proposed that this compound exists in the gas phase predominantly as the eae-conformer (25a) (80JCS(P2)91). In solution it was found by and 13C NMR spectroscopy that the predominant conformer is eae, as in the gas phase, with as minor components the eea- (25b) and eee-conformers (25c) which are frozen out at -15 °C, and the aee-conformer (25d) which is frozen out at -95 °C. The tetramethyl compound (24) exists in solution predominantly as the eaee-conformer (26a), while the minor components aeea (26b) and eeae (26c) were frozen out at -90 °C and 15 °C respectively (77TL3803, 79JCS(P2)984).
