Ethyl glycolate

Resorcinol carboxylation with carbon dioxide leads to a mixture of 2,4-dihydroxyben2oic acid [89-86-1] (26) and 2,6-dihydroxyben2oic acid [303-07-1] (27) (116). The condensation of resorcinol with chloroform under basic conditions, in the presence of cyclodextrins, leads exclusively to 2,4-dihydroxyben2aldehyde [95-01-2] (28) (117). Finally, the synthesis of l,3-bis(2-hydroxyethoxy)ben2ene [102-40-9] (29) has been described with ethylene glycol carbonate in basic medium (118), in the presence of phosphines (119). Ethylene oxide, instead of ethyl glycol carbonate, can also be used (120).

Triphenyl phosphate is a crystalline solid which has less compatibility with the polymer. This may be expected from solubility parameter data. It is often used in conjunction with dimethyl phthalate and has the added virtues of imparting flame resistance and improved water resistance. It is more permanent than DMP. Triacetin is less important now than at one time since, although it is compatible, it is also highly volatile and lowers the water resistance of the compound. Today it is essential to prepare low-cost compounds to allow cellulose acetate to compete with the synthetic polymers, and plasticisers such as ethyl phthalyl ethyl glycollate, which are superior in some respects, are now rarely used. 

Styrolyl Acetate.—Styrolene alcohol, or phenyl-ethyl glycol, is an alcohol prepared from styrolene dibromide by the action of caustic potash. It can be esterified, and forms an acetic ester of the formula CgHj. CH(OH)CHg. OOC. CHg. It is an ester with a fine flower odour, which has been described as fragrant and dreamy . It is generally stated by those who have used it that it is indispensable in the preparation of fine flower bouquets with a jasmin odour.

The three examples related to solvent replacement cover the generation and evaluation of solvent alternatives for Ethyl Glycol Acetate, Ethyl Glycol and Methylene Chloride. Where feasible, the selected solvent alternatives have been tested under conditions of industrial application and/or laboratoiy scale experiments with very encouraging results. 

The above solution procedure has been applied to find replacement solvents for the following solvents Ethyl Glycol Acetate, Ethyl Glycol and Methylene Chloride. These three solvents are extensively used in the paints and ink industry, although, recent studies have shown that they carry an appreciable environmental burden in addition to being found harmful for the health of the people exposed to them (for example, employees in the manufacturing plants and/or consumers).

Table 2 lists the properties that were selected as in previous example, along with their target values corresponding to the properties of Ethyl Glycol, the solvent to be replaced.

The two candidate compounds are commercially available. These candidate solvents were purchased and tested in the laboratories of paint industries (Constantinou 2005). It was found that the solvent 1-methoxy-2-propanol was very successful in replacing Ethyl Glycol. When it was tested in larger amounts (under actual plant operation), it was also found to be equally successful. Consequently, 1 -methoxy-2-propanol replaced Ethyl Glycol very successfully, while at the same time making a lower environmental impact. This example highlights the breadth of the CAMD-based methodology in terms of its ability to provide realistic solutions which are theoretically consistent and practically applicable.

Similarly, Jacquot and co-workers observed oxazoline formation from sodium ethyl glycolate (excess) and a 4,4-dichloro-azadiene derivative 109. However, the generality of this reaction has not been established. The product can be rationalized according to the series of reactions shown in Scheme 8.34. 

The patent literature on jet fuels is very extensive. Some examples of patents granted on jet fuels are as follows Fox Britton (Ref 2) claim the incorporation of viscosity-index improvers in jet fuels to improve engine start-up combustion efficiency over a wide range of temps. Materials claimed to be effective are ethyl glycol, Acryloid Sanotex... 

Ethyl glycolic Acid, Ethoxyacetic Acid or Glycolic Ethylether... 

The existence of normal, secondary, c. cohols of this subdivision has not yet been clearly established but ethylic glycol is probably a nonnal glycol, wl t pcopylic, b itylic, and amylic glycols are probably secondary glycols, as shown in the above fomuliB.
