Open learning texts are designed as a convenient and flexible way of studying for people who, for a variety of reasons cannot use conventional education courses. You will learn from this text the principles of one subject in Analytical Chemistry, but only by putting this knowledge into practice, under professional supervision, will you gain a full understanding of the analytical techniques described. 

To develop as a manager you have to attend to both the personal and professional sides - who you are as well as what you know and can do. Peter Drucker has observed that development is always self-development (1989 184). An educational course in, say, marketing, finance, personnel, operations scheduling, quality management, economics, business policy or business ethics will develop you personally as well as intellectually. New understanding is a transforming experience. 

The communication of new and different ideas about things and events in our external world is of course what most of education and training is about. Development occurs when we modify our theories about how it works, what is cause and what is effect. Indeed, it is commonplace for memagers on educational courses to talk about how they have changed as a result of what they have learned. 

Information about the external world tends to be conveyed on educational courses, if not quite as definitive objective truth, at least as hypotheses or theories about a possible objective truth. This Is a far cry from treating the world as a set of subjective perceptions. From this subjective perspective, there is no truth . Elveryone has their own unique view of the world around them. If we change the way we see, for example, the organization we work in then we will change the way we relate to it and can manage it.

Pharmaceutical companies often make contributions to medical communication companies that offer continuing education courses for doctors. This practice creates controversy because companies may use the courses to influence what doctors prescribe to their patients. Textbooks and educational courses may provide the principles of leadership, but it is human application and successes that identify the leader. Leaders are people who need to take responsibility for running an organization, at the same time as accommodating factors beyond their control. 

Crowl, Daniel A. and Joseph F. Louvar, Chemical Process Safety Fundamentals with Applications, ISBN 0-13-129701-5, Prentice Hall, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, 1990. This is the first widely used United States college textbook on Loss Prevention. The textbook has been selling well and is the basis for an AIChE Continuing Education Course. The price is about 85. 

The American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) sponsors over a dozen continuing education courses that focus on process loss prevention. Each of these courses is usually offered two or three times a year. 

In 1983, Trevor A. Kletz asked me to help him teach an American Institute of Chemical Engineers Continuing Education Course. I was shocked and elated to be considered. It was such a great opportunity to learn from this living legend in Loss Prevention. It has been educational and enjoyable ever since he has become my teacher, my coach, and my friend.

When we go to school we are required to take innumerable courses designed to develop our intellectual intelligence, and even a few physical education courses to develop specialized aspects of our body/instinctive intelligence. But there is an almost total lack of education of our emotional brains. Some of us were fortunate enough to be born with exceptional emotional talent and sensitivity, or our lives forced us to develop and refine our emotional sensitivities. For most of us, though, our emotional brain remains largely at the level of an untrained idiot. 

Pilot plant educational courses are usually tailored to a general audience since they impact all personnel. Instructional courses, however, may be very technical and assume a certain level of competency. In all cases, the evaluations developed as part of the training manual should effectively assess the student s level of competency. Any deficiencies identified in the assessment should be immediately corrected with additional training. 

A general-education course with no science prerequisites presents several additional challenges. Fundamental concepts in chemistry must be introduced but also interwoven within contextual societal frameworks to demonstrate the need for Green Chemistry. Additionally, instructors must confront student s misconceptions, fears and strong biases about the field of chemistry learned... 

One reason may be that since its inception ion exchange has been regarded more as a method of water production than as a method of water purification. Ion exchange equipment commonly resembles industrial plant much more closely than wastewater treatment plant. Ion exchange is also not considered a promising research area and, most importantly, it receives little attention in technical education courses. As a result, most progress in the application of ion exchange has been made by specialized companies, either resin manufacturers or producers of equipment for water treatment.
