There has been considerable debate among scientific professionals about whether mental illness is biological or organic in nature (Kotulak, [Pg.29]

Although this question is by no means settled, it appears that aspects of both are involved. Through brain-mapping and biochemistry we can identify and link emotions and behaviors to specific areas of the brain (Kotulak, 1997). It is now known that certain mental health conditions and the dysfunctional behaviors that result can be directly linked to chemical activity within certain areas of the brain. For example, in paranoia clients may experience feelings that result in the distorted perception that someone is out to get them or wants to harm them. It now appears that these feelings and emotions can be traced directly to the brain and its [Pg.29]
