Powder flowability is measured empirically as the time for a standardized mass of powder to flow out of a horizontal rotating drum through slits in the drum wall. Drum dimensions and rotational speed are standardized. 

The drum is essentially an inclined, cylindrical shell with a length to diameter ratio of 2.5-3.5, a retaining ring on the feed end, and a spiral discharge to obtain uniform distribution on the screen and optimal separation. The drum dimensions are adjusted for the required throughput rate. The slope is normally very small, e.g. 6° to the horizontal, and, in most cases, adjustable. 

Further drum dimensions are based on rules designed to provide adequate hquid holdup and vapor disengaging space. For instance, the minimum vapor space in a horizontal drum is equal to 20% of the diameter or 12 inches, whichever is greater. 

A mathematical model was predicted for drum drying of mashed potatoes on the basis of primary process parameters such as drum speed, steam pressure, number of spreader rolls, wet and dry bulb temperatures, mash moistures, and drum dimension [48]. 

Drum dryers take a solution or thin slurry and spread it as a thin film over a rotating drum heated internally by condensing steam to produce a flaked product. Typical moisture evaporation rates are 3-6 Ib/hr-ft. One or two drums (side-by-side) may be used. Drum dimensions range from 1 ft in diameter by 1.5 ft long to 5 ft in diameter by 12 ft long. The cost of drum dryers depends on the surface area of the drum. 

Another method, given in API RP521 uses the drop-out velocity of a liquid particle as the basis for design the residence time is such that the particle will fall to the liquid surface level within the length of the drum. The minimum particle diameter is assumed to be 150 tm, since flare stacks downstream can cope with particles smaller than this. In the API RP521 method, the drum dimensions are first assumed and then calculations show whether or not these are satisfactory. Often this approach can lead to a tedious trial and error solution. 

Langrish indicated that Equation 3 did not predict hold-up data of Matchett and Sheikh. The work of Langrish confumed Afacan and Masliyah s statement that more work is needed before generalizing Equation 3 to other drum dimensions and geometries.

A boiler bank is also included. The boiler-bank tube bundle provides sufficient heat transfer surface area to provide the rated capacity for saturated steam. Boiler-bank tube spacing and dimensions are arranged so that a steam-water circulation subsystem connects the top and bottom drums with subcooled water passing down the tubes farthest from the furnace and returning as a steam-water mixture.
