Drug sales, global markets

After the approval of the first product, recombinant insulin, in 1982, progress in the development of new recombinant protein pharmaceuticals was slow ([10], Fig. 17.1). The number of biotechnology-derived drugs and vaccines approved by the US Food and Dmg Administration (FDA) has increased significantly only since 1995. More recently, sales of biologies have skyrocketed, e.g. from 900 million in 1999 to an estimated 3.5 billion in 2001 for monoclonal antibodies [11]. The annual global market for biopharmaceuticals is estimated to have increased from 12 billion US to 30 billion US in 2003 [12]. 500 candidate biopharmaceuticals are undergoing clinical evaluation and over one hundred protein-based therapeutics are in the... [Pg.268]

Typical ginseng drugs are crude, not well-defined extracts from the roots of 6-year-old plants. The Panax ginseng plant is not rally widely used as a dietary supplement, but the active ginsenosides are also found in different pharmaceutical forms. In the USA alone, the annual retail sale has reached US 120 million, and the global market is more than US 19.5 billion [66]. [Pg.2785]

Can this separation be made Is there any connection between the use of a price for pharmaceutical products in a given country and the level of R D in that country Fora country like country U whose purchases constitute a very large share of the world drug market, the connection is obvious the buying decisions of a major player obviously affect local drug companies as well as those elsewhere. For a smaller country, like country T, the connection is less obvious R D often would be undertaken based on expected global sales, primarily in other countries, and the level of local sales need not appreciably... [Pg.212]

Global sales of proprietary drugs were 505 billion in 2005, or more than 90% of the total pharma market. With a share of 45%, the United States has by far the single largest market. Global sales of generics were about 45 billion in 2005 (except China and India), or less than 10% of the total pharma market. Obviously, the difference in production volumes is smaller. [Pg.84]

The import of drugs consists of approximately 15 percent of global requirement by amount, and is around 52 percent of monetary value (Scrip 1996). In recent years, according to the MOHSW and Central Statistical Office, the Polish pharmaceutical market has increased greatly, from less than US 600 million in 1990 to about US 2 billion in 1996 (of which more than 10 percent was in 1995). The expected value for the beginning of year 2000 is more than US 4 billion (Scrip 1991) (Scrip 1996) (Forum International Conference Warsaw 1996). Details on pharmaceutical sales are presented in Figures 1 and 2. [Pg.459]

Biologies have taken some time to get off the ground but are making slow and steady progress. Table 45.7 shows the global sales of the top ten. These add up to 33 billion, compared with 60 billion for the top ten conventional drugs. Thus, they are serious players in the pharmaceutical market. [Pg.919]
