Diversified chemicals

Laboratory Description. The laboratory under consideration will conduct diversified chemical surety materiel laboratory operations. These materials are anticholinergic agents and are extremely lethal in small concentrations. The recommended permissible airborne exposure concentration for some of these agents is 0.0001 mg/m3 (2 x 10-5 ppm). Two personnel are required, as a minimum, to perform this operation. 

Company B is a diversified chemical manufacturing company with worldwide operations. CSB staff visited the corporate headquarters, which also houses extensive chemical manufacturing operations. The site also has an extensive thermal hazards testing capability. CSB met with corporate staff, site manufacturing personnel, and thermal hazards chemists. The Company B testing laboratory evaluates a range of chemicals. 

Fine-chemical companies vary substantially in size. The largest ones have sales of more than 500 million the smallest ones, a few million per year (see Table 2.1). The leading companies are typically divisions of large, diversified chemical companies. The majority are located in Europe, particularly along the axis Amsterdam (The Netherlands)/Basel (Switzerland)/Florence (Italy) and in the United Kingdom. 

Many fine chemicals are not traded, but produced in-house by diversified chemical and life science companies. One must distinguish, therefore, between merchant value and production value of fine chemicals (PCs in the following equation). The former is the product of traded quantities times the unit sales prices the latter, the product of produced quantities times (virtual) unit prices of captively manufactured products. The total value is the sum of both merchant and production values ... 

Diversified companies presented a much more puzzling picture during the last cycle. In terms of total return to shareholders, surprisingly, diversified chemical companies performed best among the industry subgroups from 1992 onwards. 

In other words, what integrated and diversified chemical companies need now is bold action aimed at turning them into focused entrepreneurial organizations. Those seeking to make such a transition should first focus on key product or market segments, and then consolidate at the business unit level or below. Once companies have taken these steps, they should use their new platform as the basis for an ambitious growth plan. If they are to execute each step successfully, however, companies will also need to create a more entrepreneurial culture. The result will be an industry that looks very different from toda/s. 

Comments A very diversified chemical company with distinct product lines for such things as photography, electroplating and everything else. They are surprisingly approachable. Proposition them directly for sales or ask for a distributor. 

In 2002, DuPont celebrated its 200th anniversary. Its past 100 years were marked by its transformation from a company known for its explosives to a diversified chemical company. Today, DuPont is in the midst of another remake, into an integrated science company. It realizes that only by aligning itself with society s needs can a corporation like DuPont continues its successes into its next century.

The business model of the future will no longer be the broadly diversified chemical company of the past, but rather a provider focussing on the special products of its (few) business operations that have a leading global market position. Depending on the product portfolio, a distinction can be made between various categories of providers (see Fig. 3). 

The annual global consumption of surface active agents or surfactants in 2006 was estimated to reach 13 million metric tons, with the break up of regional sales as depicted in Figure 1.1. There are arguably five major participants in the surfactant supply chain including (1) basic raw-material processors, (2) feedstock and diversified chemical producers, (3) surfactant converters, (4) product formulators, and (5) distributors/retailers, some of which are listed in Figure 1.2. 

DuPont, Pierre Samuel (1870-1954) An American chemist and industrialist who worked for the E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company, and becoming its president from 1915 to 1920. He is noted for transforming the American explosives producer into the well-known diversified chemical producer. 

Richard Powers s novel. Gain, provides a notable exception. It is written as two parallel stories one describes the rise of a large diversified chemical and later pharmaceutical company, Clare, and the co-development of its company town Lacewood, Illinois. The other recounts the illness and death of Laura Bodey, a divorced mother of two and resident of Lacewood who develops ovarian cancer. When a group of patients tries to mount a class-action suit against Clare, Laura Bodey refuses to participate.
