Problems (and solutions) include inaccurate and/ or unstable pH readings caused by crosscontamination (rinse electrode assembly with distilled water and blot dry between measure-ments) development of a protein film on the surface of the electrode (soak in 1% w/v pepsin in 0.1 mol L-1 HCI for at least an hour) deposition of organic or inorganic contaminants on the glass bulb (use an organic solvent, such as acetone, or a solution of 0.1 mol L 1 disodium ethylenediamine-tetraacetic acid, respectively) drying out of the internal reference solutions (drain, flush and refill with fresh solution, then allow to equilibrate in 0.1 mol L 1 HCI for at least an hour) cracks or chips to the surface of the glass bulb (use a replacement electrode). [Pg.60]

As a means of decreasing side reactions in the dehydrogenation of tertiary amines with mercuric acetate, Knabe studied the oxidation of alkaloids of the type of papaverine (1) in the presence of an equivalent amount of the sequestering agent ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) as the disodium salt. The products were the papaverinium salt (2) and the dihydro salt (3) in the yields noted- In the absence of the complexing agent, papaverine is cleaved at the methylene bridge. [Pg.327]

Hydrogen generation requires a photosensitizer, an electron donor, an electron mediator and a multi-electron redox eatalyst. To obtain the polymer the reaction mixture must be refluxed in methanol for 20 hours. This yields a polymer wifli 1% viologen groups. In the system, water donates the protons and electrons are supplied by ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid disodium salt. The viologen groups transport the electrons to the multi-electron redox catalyst (2,2 -bipyridine)ruthenium(ll), Ru(bpy). ... [Pg.302]

Chelation with di- and trivalent metal ions showed even more drastic permeability changes. The experiment was performed by alternating addition of and ETA (ethylenediamine-tetraacetic acid disodium salt), an effective polydentate ligand for Cu. The result is shown in Fig. 25. It is seen that the alternating addition of Cu ... [Pg.33]

All the reagents were of analytical reagent grade and all the solutions were prepared in doubly distilled (first time from alkaline KMnO ) and CO free deionized water. A solution of paracetamol (99%, Acros organics, NJ, USA) 1.0 °— 10 mol dm was prepared by dissolving 0.151 g of paracetamol in water, and the solution was diluted to the mark in 100 cm3 volumetric flask. Stock Solutions of potassium dichromate (1.0 °— 10 mol dm" ) and manganese(II) chloride (1.0°—10" mol dm" ), disodium salt of ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) (1.0°— 10 mol dm ), and sodiumdodecyl sulphate (SDS) (1.0°—10 mol dm ) were prepared in a similar manner. The solution of EDTA was stored in a polythene... [Pg.263]

Apart from symptomatic treatment, there is currently no effective clinical treatment for Cd intoxication. One approach consists of trying to eliminate Cd using metal chelators such as ethylenediamine-N,N,N ,N -tetraacetate (EDTA) given by intravenous infusion to increase its urinary excretion [438], or if toxicity is so severe that renal function is impaired, EDTA is added to the dialysate during hemodialysis [439]. However, the role of EDTA remains unclear because of the limited number of reports in the literature and because chelation therapy for Cd may increase the uptake of Cd by the kidneys and increase the risk of nephrotoxicity. Friberg and Blinder [437] therefore recommended that EDTA is contra-indicated because of its nephrotoxicity when administered in combination with Cd. In experimental systems some chelators can reduce acute Cd-induced mortality [440]. Oral dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) [441,442] or calcium disodium diethylene-triaminepentaacetate (DTPA) given parenterally [443] are the most effective antidotes, provided that treatment is started very soon after Cd ingestion. [Pg.446]
