Dishwashing alkyl ether sulfates

In 1991 the use of amidether carboxylate in combination with anionics like alkanesulfonate, alkylbenzolsulfonate, and alkyl ether sulfate to improve mildness and foam properties in the presence of soil was described [72]. Later a comparison study of the use of alkyl ether carboxylate, amidether carboxylate, and cocamidopropylbetaine in concentrated dishwashing formulations showed, in addition to the above-mentioned properties, the advantage of ether carboxylates in the construction of highly active formulations [144].

A liquid kitchen detergent especially for dishwashing is made of 20% alkyl ether sulfate, 6% a-sulfo fatty acid ethyl ester salt (from coconut oil), 4% dimethyllaurylamineoxide, 2% sodium octenyl succinate, and 68% water [93],... 

Applications. Alkyl ether sulfates constitute (with LAS and alkyl sulfates) one of the most important group among anionic surfactants. They are used in a broad spectrum of domestic applications such as household cleaners (e.g., carpet cleaners), dishwashing liquids, and fabric care (powders and liquids).

Sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate is undoubtedly the anionic surfactant used in the greatest amount because it is the basic component in almost all laundry and dishwashing detergents in powder and liquid forms. However, alcohol and alcohol ether sulfates are the more versatile anionic surfactants because their properties vary, with the alkyl chain, with the number of moles of ethylene oxide added to the base alcohol and with the cation. Consequently, alcohol and alcohol ether sulfates are used in almost all scientific, consumer, and industrial applications. 

Alcohol ether sulfates are used in mixture with sulfonates, either alkyl-benzenesulfonates or a-olefinsulfonates, and other surfactants, such as fatty alkanolamides, in manual liquid dishwashing detergents and light-duty detergents. These combinations show the excellent emulsifying and foaming properties required in dishwashing. 

The main performance characteristics of light-duty liquids or dishwash blends are soil emulsification and foaming. Figueroa-Raulli [73] published a comparative study of AOS vs. alkyl sulfates (AS), alcohol ether sulfates (AES), and linear alkylbenzenesulfonates (LAS) in light-duty liquid blends. The blends were evaluated for flash foam, the stability of foam under accumulating soil loads, and for the number of plates washed. Blend performance is expressed as a percentage of a dishwash reference standard.
