Disease tumor suppressers

The combination of tyrphostins with cytotoxic drugs can be followed by immunotherapy in order to eliminate residual disease. Though such combinations have not yet been examined, the combination of AG 490 and IL-12 against IL-6 dependent multiple myeloma recently showed impressive tumor suppressive effects [54], suggesting that the general idea may indeed be correct. [Pg.12]

Overall, numerous mechanisms as indicated above could account for the tumor-suppressive effects of curcumin (Figure 23.3). Curcumin also has modulatory effects in diseases besides cancer (Figure 23.4). These effects are described in Section 23.3 and Section 23.4. [Pg.431]

Preliminary studies have shown that tangeritin, used in plant-derived menopausal medications, has hypolipidemic effects lowering cholesterol in animals [96], and chemoprotective effects against Parkinson s disease on rats [97]. Tangeritin has been also demonstrated to be an effective tumor growth and invasion inhibitor on human MCP 7/6 breast cancer cells in vitro however, it has been shown to antagonize tamoxifen tumor-suppressing effect when simultaneously used with it [98]. [Pg.281]

After using C A19-9 as the only accepted diagnostic marker for pancreatic cancer for two decades [92], a bewildering number of potential biomarkers are currently under evaluation [93]. Apeak (3334.7 Da) found by SELDI-TOF-MS in 5/15 pancreatic adenocarcinoma cell lines was identified by Qq-TOF-MS/MS as the COOH-terminal fragment of DMBTl, a putative tumor suppression protein intracellularly generated by Umited prior proteolysis. Analyses of other cell lines suggested that the marker may be unique to pancreatic adenocarcinoma [94]. In another study, a differentially expressed peak (—16,570 Da) was detected in 10/15 samples from pancreatic adenocarcinoma in contrast to only 1/7 with other pancreatic diseases. The peak was identified as hepatocarcinoma-intestine-pancreas/pancreatitis-associated protein I (HIP-PAP I) by SELDI immunoassay [95]. [Pg.390]

Lipoplexes are commonly used in gene therapy to transfer genetic material into a cancer cell, either by suppressing oncogenes or activating tumor suppression control genes. Lipoplexes have also been used to successfully transfect respiratory endothelial cells leading to studies to treat respiratory diseases such as cystic fibrosis. [Pg.347]

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) develops in patients with chronic liver diseases associated with hepatitis B and hepatitis C vims infections with high incidences. Here, an acyclic retinoid has been shown to suppress the posttherapeutic recurrence after interferon-y or glycerrhicin treatment in cirrhotic patients who underwent curative treatment of preceding tumors. The retinoid induced the disappearance of serum lectin-reactive a-fetoprotein (AFP-L3), a tumor marker indicating the presence of unrecognizable tumors in the remnant liver, suggesting a deletion of such minute (pre)malignant clones (clonal deletion). As a molecular mechanism of the clonal deletion, a novel mechanism of... [Pg.1076]

Comorbid conditions can increase the risk of anemia substantially. Anemia is especially common in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy and patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The incidence of anemia in cancer patients varies based on tumor type and the level of myelo-suppression the chemotherapy regimen causes. For instance, serious anemia [hemoglobin 7.9 g/dL or less (79 g/L or 4.9 mmol/L)] occurs in at least 75% of patients who receive a common chemotherapy regimen for lymphoma, but serious anemia may occur in only approximately 10% of patients who receive common chemotherapy regimens for... [Pg.976]

UCN-01 is currently being explored in cancer patients in Phase I/II clinical trials, both as a single agent and in combination with conventional chemotherapeutic drugs (e.g., cytarabine, topotecan). In this last scenario, results from a Phase I clinical trial in combination with topotecan showed antitumor activity in 12 patients with advanced solid tumor with one partial response and three cases of stable disease. However, and due to the low selectivity of UCN-01, it is unclear which inhibited kinase(s) are suppressing growth and survival of cancer cells in these clinical studies. [Pg.184]

Antiemetic effects Drugs with antiemetic effect can obscure signs of toxicity of other drugs, or mask symptoms of disease (eg, brain tumor, intestinal obstruction, Reye syndrome). They can suppress the cough reflex aspiration is possible. [Pg.1103]

B. Indications and use Sandostatin is indicated to reduce blood levels of growth hormone and IGF-I (somatomedin-C) in acromegaly patients who have had inadequate response to or cannot be treated with surgical resection, pituitary irradiation, or bromocriptine mesylate at maximally tolerated doses. It is also indicated for the symptomatic treatment of patients with metastatic carcinoid tumors, where it suppresses or inhibits the severe diarrhea and flushing episodes associated with the disease, and for the treatment of the profuse watery diarrhea associated with VIP (vasoactive intestinal peptide)-secreting tumors (vipomas). [Pg.241]
