Direct limit

With few exceptions, gears are one-directional power transmission devices. Unless a special bi-directional gear set is specified, gears have a specific direction of rotation and will not provide smooth, trouble-free power transmission when the direction is reversed. The reason for this one-directional limitation is that gear manufacturers do not finish the non-power side of the tooth profile. This is primarily a cost-savings issue and should not affect gear operation. 

In this way, the sustainability parameter a includes the depletion rates of all resources used in the process (via aaverase), while, at the same time, it is directly limited by the resource with the highest depletion rate. 

A direct limit on qu would require an experiment working with hydrogen atoms or molecules. As far as we know, no interferometry with separated arms using an hydrogen beam has been realized up-to-now but such an experiment could be eventually realized using material gratings [23]. 

The method developed in the BCR project (Franz and Rijk 1997) to determine butadiene in all of the official food simulants and probably also in real foodstuffs was pre-validated by a collaborative trial with three laboratories. It was found appropriate in principle for the quantitative determination of butadiene at a range of 0.01 to 0.1 mg/kg in food simulants. Indeed the limit of detection was found to be in the range 4 to 9 (J-g/kg, thus being even in the worst case significantly lower than originally presumed when establishing the Plastics Directive limit of 0.02 mg/kg. 

The few studies that exist on Fe control of bacterial degradation in HNLC waters agreed that bacterio-plankton is first C-limited as a consequence of low primary production due to Fe limitation and not directly limited by Fe (Hutchins et al. 1998 Church et al. 2000 Kirchman et al. 2000). As reported above, the amount of TOC, potential OC available for bacteria, was similar in our HFe and LFe experiments and therefore bacteria could be colimited by two major factors the availability of Fe and the quality of the organic matter. These factors cannot be discriminated in our experiments. HFe bioassays contained, in addition to increased Fe, a better quality of OM than the LFe bioassays. Moreover, as the distribution in dissolved and particulate organic carbon was affected by Fe availability in the phytoplanktonic cultures, the response of bacteria to different size pool of organic matter (DOM-TOM) was also investigated.

The SAVE triage was developed to direct limited resources to the subgroup of patients expected to benefit most from their use. The SAVE assesses survivability of patients with various injuries and, on the basis of trauma statistics, uses this information to describe the relationship between expected benefits and resources consumed. Because early transport to an intact medical system is unavailable, this information guides treatment priorities in the field to a level beyond the scope of the START methodology (Benson et al., 1996).

Nash points out that what might be possible in other industries may not always be possible for pharmaceutical processes in that a Cpk of 1.33 may not always be achievable. Specifications should be customer-directed limits that ensure safety and efficacy, not limits to control the consistency of process. Internal control limits should be used for this purpose. Many of our specifications are either provided to us by the USP or influenced by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), where industry is encouraged to set specifications as tight as the process will allow. Companies are sometimes asked to agree as to what they view as tight specifications before the full experience that comes with additional production...
