Miscellaneous Atomization Methods A few elements may be atomized by a chemical reaction that produces a volatile product. Elements such as As, Se, Sb, Bi, Ge, Sn, Te, and Pb form volatile hydrides when reacted with NaBH4 in acid. An inert gas carries the volatile hydrides to either a flame or to a heated quartz observation tube situated in the optical path. Mercury is determined by the cold-vapor method in which it is reduced to elemental mercury with SnCb- The volatile Hg is carried by an inert gas to an unheated observation tube situated in the instrument s optical path. [Pg.415]

Miscellaneous Pharmaceutical Processes. Solvent extraction is used for the preparation of many products that ate either isolated from naturally occurring materials or purified during synthesis. Among these are sulfa dmgs, methaqualone [72-44-6] phenobarbital [50-06-6] antihistamines, cortisone [53-06-5] estrogens and other hormones (qv), and reserpine [50-55-5] and alkaloids (qv). Common solvents for these appHcations are chloroform, isoamyl alcohol, diethyl ether, and methylene chloride. Distribution coefficient data for dmg species are important for the design of solvent extraction procedures. These can be determined with a laboratory continuous extraction system (AKUEVE) (244). [Pg.79]

The direct reaction of 1-alkenes with strong sulfonating agents leads to surface-active anionic mixtures containing both alkenesulfonates and hydroxyalkane sulfonates as major products, together with small amounts of disulfonate components, unreacted material, and miscellaneous minor products (alkanes, branched or internal alkenes, secondary alcohols, sulfonate esters, and sultones). The end points of precipitation titrations can be variously detected. An indicator exhibiting a pronounced colour change with the first excess of the titrant may be used. The Mohr method, involving the formation of red silver chromate with the appearance of an excess of silver ions, is an important example of this procedure, whilst the Volhard method, which uses the ferric thiocyanate colour as an indication of the presence of excess thiocyanate ions, is another. A series of indicators known as adsorption indicators have also been utilized. These consist of organic dyes such as fluorescein which are used in silver nitrate titrations. When the equivalence point is passed the excess silver ions are adsorbed on the precipitate to give a positively charged surface which attracts and adsorbs fluoresceinate ions. This adsorption is accompanied by the appearance of a red colour on the precipitate surface. Finally, the electroanalytical methods described in Chapter 6 may be used to scan the solution for metal ions. Table 5.12 includes some examples of substances determined by silver titrations and Table 5.13 some miscellaneous precipitation methods. A variety of miscellaneous elements can also occur in a residual fuel oil fraction. For example, chlorine is present as a chlorinated hydrocarbon and can be determined (ASTM D808, D1317, D6160). A rapid test method suitable for analysis of samples by nontechnical personnel is also available (ASTM D5384) and uses a commercial test kit where the oil sample is reacted with metallic sodium to convert organic halogens to halide, which is titrated with mercuric nitrate using diphenyl carbazone indicator.
