Detergent-Consumer Liquid

Substantial quantities of UPVC are also used for blow moulded containers for such diverse materials as consumable liquids such as fruit squashes, liquids for household use such as detergents and disinfectants, cosmetics and toiletries, and pharmaceuticals. For most of these applications UPVC is in competition with at least one other polymer, particularly poly(ethylene) terephthalate (Chapter 25), polyethylene (Chapter 10), polypropylene (Chapter 11) and, to a small extent, the nitrile resins (Chapter 15). The net result is that in recent years there has been some replacement of PPVC in these areas, in part because of problems of waste disposal. [Pg.357]

Sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate is undoubtedly the anionic surfactant used in the greatest amount because it is the basic component in almost all laundry and dishwashing detergents in powder and liquid forms. However, alcohol and alcohol ether sulfates are the more versatile anionic surfactants because their properties vary, with the alkyl chain, with the number of moles of ethylene oxide added to the base alcohol and with the cation. Consequently, alcohol and alcohol ether sulfates are used in almost all scientific, consumer, and industrial applications. [Pg.273]

The applications of alcohol sulfates in consumer products depend on the alkyl chain and in some cases on the cation. Alcohol sulfates with alkyl chains 8 C1() are seldom used in consumer products except occasionally as hydrotropes in liquid detergent formulations. However, alcohol sulfates in the range C10-C18 are used in many commonly used formulations although other surfactants are generally added to enhance their properties. In some of these applications, particularly in shampoos, they compete with alcohol ether sulfates of the same alkyl chain distribution. The pattern of use of alcohol sulfates or alcohol ether sulfates in formulations varies with consumer personal care and laundry washing preferences in different cultural areas of the world. [Pg.276]

We also need soaps for cleaning the crockery after a meal of chips, pizza or greasy sausages. Such cleaning can be difficult and time-consuming unless we first add to the water an effective soap or detergent such as washing-up liquid . [Pg.519]

Ordinary all-purpose household cleaner is sold in concentrated liquid form, and requires dilution by consumers before application. This potentially causes either wastage or overdosing as the consumer is left alone to judge the correct amount of detergent to use. In addition, acid/alkali bums for consumers are not uncommon during the dilution process. Hence a demand for a more convenient product is apparent in the market. [Pg.266]

A detergent company wants to make a liquid laundry detergent with high cleaning power. The new product is supposed to be a premium one with many qualities, hence it is expected to involve the use of many different ingredients. It is also desired to give consumers a creamy and rich impression. [Pg.269]

The large demand for benzene is due to its use as a starting material in the production of polystyrene, acrylonitrile styrene butadiene rubber, nylons, polycarbonates and linear alkyl benzene detergent. All of these final chemical products that are suitable to form into consumer goods have multiple chemical transformations in various industrial processes to obtain them from benzene. Because the production of benzene does not involve a liquid adsorptive process on a zeolite, these processes are not described here but can be found in other sources. However, it is important to note that benzene is typically a large byproduct from an aromatics... [Pg.230]

Synthetic detergents are marketed as liquids, slurries, drum-dried flakes and spray-dried beads, the latter being the form most frequently appearing in consumer packages. [Pg.333]

An important case is the application of enzymes in laundry detergents. Market trends in the United States show that consumers prefer liquids to powder detergents by a ratio of 2 to 1. These products are stored with no temperature control on shelves in the presence of harsh surfactants, such as linear alkylbenzyl sulfonate (LAS) and require extraordinary measures for stabilization. LAS, by its nature as an effective cleaning agent, causes surfactant-induced unfolding in proteins. There are countless examples of the development of stabilization systems in the intellectual property space. A common theme is to reduce the water activity and to use borate/glycol stabilizers that bind to the active site of proteases. [Pg.1340]
