Detergency - Laundry Builder

Note Use laundry detergent, unbuilt in conjunction with laundry builder, silicated (both linen and industrial) at 1 part bw detergent to 2-4 parts builder solution. [Pg.129]

Laundry washing consumes and releases large amounts of chemicals into wastewater. Laundry products used in the household include detergents, bleaches, builders, and metal chelating agents. Toxic chemicals contained in these include surfactants, chlorine, organic peroxides, phosphates, alkalis, and glycol ethers [35]. [Pg.72]

Phospha.tes, Pentasodium triphosphate [7758-29-4] sodium tripolyphosphate, STPP, Na P O Q, is the most widely used and most effective builder in heavy-duty fabric washing compositions (see also Phosphoric acid and phosphates). It is a strong sequestrant for calcium and magnesium, with a p c of ca 6, and provides exceUent suspending action for soils. Because of its high sequestration power, it also finds extensive appHcation in automatic-dishwashing detergents. Sodium tripolyphosphate forms stable hydrates and thus aids in the manufacture of crisp spray-dried laundry powders. [Pg.527]

Tetrasodium pyrophosphate [7722-88-5] Na4P20y, is another important primary builder and detergent. In sequestration, it is not quite as effective as sodium tripolyphosphate and its usage in heavy-duty laundry powders has declined in recent years. Functionally, tetrasodium pyrophosphate is both a builder for surfactants (ie, water softener) and alkaH. [Pg.527]

Ether carboxylates are used not only in powdered detergents but in liquid laundry detergents for their hard water stability, lime soap dispersibility, and electrolyte stability they improve the suspension stability and rheology of the electrolyte builder [130,131]. Formulations based particularly on lauryl ether carboxylate + 4.5 EO combined with fatty acid salt and other anionic surfactants are described [132], sometimes in combination with quaternary compounds as softeners [133,163]. Ether carboxylates show improved cleaning properties as suds-controlling agents in formulations with ethoxylated alkylphenol or fatty alcohol, alkyl phosphate esters or alkoxylate phosphate esters, and water-soluble builders [134]. [Pg.339]

A great number of detergent compositions using a-sulfo fatty acid esters are given in the patent literature. The a-ester sulfonates are major or minor components, besides other surfactants and builders [68-76]. Some examples of laundry and dishwashing detergents are given below. [Pg.488]

The concept of a soap-LSDA detergent represents a simple solution to the quest for less polluting highly efficient laundry detergents [47,48]. If present worldwide price trends for petrochemicals, phosphates, and other builders continue to rise, the use of tallow or other fats and oils, which are replenishable agricultural products or byproducts, should become economically more attractive. Since the USD A research team initiated research on soap-LSDA detergents, the a-sulfonated fatty acid esters (MES) have become commercially available in the United States, Europe, and Japan. [Pg.644]
