Design ideas

The stage has produced eight ideas that need to be evaluated in order to decide which of them can be developed into inventive design concepts and eventually used for practical purposes. 

Gigantic speaker-like device supported at both ends 

Steel plates kept in place by the electromagnetic field 

Modification of idea No. 2 but with the electromagnetic field activated only when loads are applied

Good design ideas for new plants are also good for existing plants, but there are three basic differences. (/) Because a plant already exists, the capital—operating cost curve differs. Usually, this makes it more difficult to reduce utiHty costs to as low a level as in a new plant. (2) The real economic justification for change is more likely to be obscured by the plant accounting system and other nontechnical inputs. (2) The real process needs are... 

The energy audit has seven components as-it-is balance, field survey, equipment tests, checking against optimum design, idea-generation meeting, evaluation, and foUow-up. 

Follow-Up. If no savings result, the effort has been wasted. Thus the audit leader must ensure that the potential of every good design idea is recognized by management and the project-generation channels of the company. 

An obvious extension of the bipolar design idea presented in the previous section is the induction of NEMCA using multi-stripe or multi-dot Pt catalysts placed between two terminal Au electrodes, as shown in Figs. 12.8 and 12.9. Both designs have been successfully tested as shown in these figures.10 Larger terminal voltages are applied here between the two Au electrodes, so that the potential difference in each individual cell formed between the Pt stripes or dots is of the order of IV.10... 

Another source of design ideas is the production plant. There the operators and engineers must surmount the problems that arise daily in producing an adequate supply of a quality product. Sometimes accidentally, sometimes by hard work, new processing conditions are found that eliminate the need for some purification steps or that greatly increase the plant capacity. People who have transferred from another production operation are often able to come up with suggestions that worked in other circumstances and may profitably be applied to the process with which they are now involved.

This style of collaboration is common when each participant is one role of many played by some other object and the collaboration is part of a framework. These generic pieces of design are rarely about one object. Instead, they are about the relationships and interactions between members of groups of objects. Most of the design patterns discussed in books and bulletin boards are based on such collaborations for example, the observer pattern, which keeps many views up-to-date with one subject or proxy, which provides a local representative of a remote object or any of the more specialized design ideas that are fitted together to make any system. 

Are you going to reuse the old code or only the old design ideas or only the old business model In general, each of these elements can be reused using appropriate techniques. In each case, it is essential to capture the existing concepts first (using the modeling notation in earlier chapters) and, separately, to document where you d like to be.

What can be expected in the near and middle future for inhaled powder delivery There certainly will be some more new passive devices to reach the market and the patient, but it seems that a lot of purely mechanical design ideas have been implemented already in the newest generation of multiple-dose DPIs. Most important are audible and visible feedback features that help to improve delivery efficiency and patient compliance. Future improvements also seem possible in reducing dependency of the particle dispersion on actuation flow rate and internal device resistance. The next or over-next generation of multiple-dose devices also may incorporate lean, inexpensive, but rugged electronics...
