Demonstration sites

Tidal Power. Tidal power is caused by the gravitational pull of the sun and especially the moon, as they pull at the earth. Reacting to this pull, the ocean s waters rise, causing a high tide where the moon is closest. The difference between low and high tide can range from a few cm to several meters. Harnessing tidal power for electricity production by the use of dams requires a tidal difference of at least 4.5 m, a requirement met at few locations in the United States. Thus, the principal demonstration sites of tidal power are in Canada, China, and France.

At a demonstration site at Fort Polk, Louisiana, BSWS costs were 1400/ton for the 835 tons of soil treated. Fixed costs were high at this site ( 830/ton) however, it is estimated that these costs would decrease significantly for a full-scale operation. Based on the results of this demonstration, costs for a full-scale operation treating 10,000 tons of soil would be approximately 170/ton. Fixed costs were estimated to be 70/ton (D200953, p.l).

In another approach to serving industry through technology transfer, the FLC s Far West Region has begun a demonstration project to establish an active brokerage service within the industrial community. The city of Santa Clara, California (in the heart of "silicon valley") was selected as the first trial and demonstration site. A Task Force composed of representatives of the Santa Clara Chamber of Commerce, the local business community, the FLC, the Southwest Innovation Group and the City of Santa Clara was formed to develop a plan of action and to develop an operational structure. 

Yuma Proving Ground, Arizona Active Army facility. Research and development and applied technology testing-demonstration for surface unexploded ordnance detection, identification, and remediation in both controlled and uncontrolled test environments. This would also be a DOIT Committee process demonstration site. 

The delisting change would minimize the expensive downtime of equipment and dedicated manpower at the demonstration site since the lengthy formal process involved with delisting would be completed prior to project start. 

Our laboratory has recently been selected by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) as one of its two national centers of excellence in separation science. This has given us an opportunity to broaden our efforts towards the advancement of all modes of electrophoresis for large scale processing. Thus, our Center has been chosen by European manufacturers as the demonstration site for the United States of two unique electrophoretic instruments.

Cost information available for US projects is scarce and tends to be based on pilot-scale, research studies or demonstration sites (USEPA, 1995,1999,2003 DOE, 1996 ITRC, 1997 United States Army Environmental Center, 2000). There has been multiple pilot-scale and full-scale demonstrations completed, but costs for these type of projects are significantly higher than full-scale commercial installations due to the small-scale, intensive monitoring requirements and multiple layers of oversight. Other than Lasagna, there are no recent successful commercial applications in the USA from which to draw accurate cost information not based on research, pilot, or demonstration sites. 

The choice of the carbonation operation is based on experience feedback from secondary pipework treatment operations for inspection and carbonation of the SPX irradiated assemblies storage tank on the Phenix power station at the time of its dismantling. The carbonation of the pipework residual sodium therefore constitutes the reference solution for the treatment of secondary and auxiliary SPX circuits. However, it was decided to engage a demonstration site for treatment of an auxiliary circuit by the carbonation process. The selected auxiliary circuit has been in a so-called fossil condition since 1992. Today, this circuit has been partly dismantled and comprises several parts drained and maintained under inert gas. It consists of two identical and independent loops whose main characteristics are as follows ... 

It is planned to proceed to pipework carbonation on one loop and then to dismantling of the installations. The other loop will be dismantled directly without preliminary treatment of the residual sodium. A comparative assessment of the two methods and experience feedback from the operations will be examined. The decision to start a demonstration site for this circuit satisfies the following needs to ... 

The residual sodium treatment of circuits by carbonation. The demonstration site should make it possible to decide on the merits of this type of treatment on comparable circuits. Even so, preliminary carbonation of the secondary/main circuits with specific components such as the SGs seems unavoidable. Preliminary studies of the carbonation of these circuits have been performed. The pilot site is planned for the beginning of 2003 and the application to the other secondary circuits from 2004 to 2006.
