Decontamination emergency

Explore the options for decontaminants emerging from other agencies and the commercial sector in addition to participation in the Joint CBD Program. 

Accidental pollution incidents arise from spillages, gas emissions, and liquid discharges sometimes in transportation. The main considerations are prevention, containment, and effective mitigatory and emergency action according to the principles outlined in earlier chapters. Effective clean-up and decontamination are then needed. 

Access to emergency showers and eyewashes is part of the site-specific emergency response and medical first-aid programs, and is unrelated to sanitation or decontamination. Requirements for the availability and location of emergency showers and eyewashes are specified under 29 CFR 1910.151. 

The hazardous waste standard requires employers to make certain that when showers are a necessary step in the decontamination process, their employees shower at the end of their work shift and when leaving the hazardous waste site. Sanitation-related showers (unlike decontamination showers) are understood to be voluntary. Decontamination and emergency showers should be located close to the worksite. Sanitary showers may be located at some distance from the worksite. A statement in the safety plan encouraging good personal hygiene and daily showers is a good idea. In addition, workers should be encouraged to shower daily even if no shower is available at the worksite. 

The plan must include a list of all emergency equipment at tlic facility (such as fire cxtinguisliing systems, spill control equipment, internal and c.xtcrnal communications and alarm systems, and decontamination equipment). In addition, the plan must include for each item on the list a physical description, a brief outline of its capabilities, and its location...

Experience of using these filters with the removable cartridges in Chernobyl regions has shown that they have been able to solve problems conducted with radioactive contamination of potable water preventing panic of populace, preventing the water contamination in the distance between the water supply station and consumers, preventing consequences of emergency cases at the water supply stations, supply with decontaminated water at remote settlements, etc.

Hold a briefing for entry personnel and support crew. Ensure that all staff on scene understand emergency signals, preplanned escape routes, locations of Hot/Warm/ Cold zones, operational hazards at this site, the evacuation system, the buddy system, the need for appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) the potential need to decontaminate rescuers and their equipment, and contaminated persons location of rehabilitation area, possible air space closure over incident site, etc.
