Public declarations

It is very simple the makeObjectO method simply instantiates a CheshireManager object and returns it. Notice the class is not declared public it can be accessed only by other classes in the package. This PoolableCheshireManagerFactory is not to be accessed by clients of CheshireManager objects. It is used only to create the CheshireManager pool. [Pg.178]

The arguments are a list of (zero, one, or more) parameters to be passed into or out of the subroutine, except when the parameters in question have been declared Public, see section 10. lg. We have already encountered numerous subroutines in sections 10.5, 10.6, and 10.7. For instance, in section 10.7 we used the subroutines WLS0( ) and WLS1( ) to assign a numerical value to p (of either 0 or 1) for use in the subsequent subroutine WeightedLeastSquares(p), while the latter in turn farmed out its matrix operations to the subroutines Transpose(Ml,rl,cl,Mout), Multiply(Ml,rl,cl,M2,c2, Mout), and Invert(Ml,rl,n,Mout). The use of Public parameters was illustrated in section 10.9. [Pg.474]

We hereby affirm, clearly, specifically, and irrevocably, that Kosovo shall be legally bound to comply with the provisions contained in this Declaration, including, especially the obligations for it under the Ahtisaari Plan. In all of these matters, we shall act consistent with principles of international law and resolutions of the Security Council of the United Nations, including resolution 1244 (1999). We declare publicly that all states are entitled to rely upon this declaration, and appeal to them to extend to us their support and friendship. [Pg.140]

The operating organization shonld declare publicly in its policy statement that one of its corporate objectives is its commitment to nuclear safety — this objective overrides the demands of prodnction. [Pg.15]

Fumigation with ethylene oxide does indeed lead to a considerable reduction in the germ count (and at the same time destruction of insects), but the process, because of the formation of toxic reaction products (ethylene chlorhydrin, ethylene glycol) has been banned throughout the European Community since 01.01.1990 Ionizing irradiation a declaration of the treatment is obligatory, but such drugs find little acceptance by the public who expect nature s products as such. [Pg.35]

The calorific value is constantly monitored, and it is a condition of the Gas (Declaration of Calorific Value) Regulations 1972 that alterations in the declared calorific value (CV) are publicly made known. It is customary to quote the gross (upper) CV rather than the net (lower) CV. The difference between the two represents the heat contained in the latent heat of vaporization of the water vapor in the products of combustion that can only be recovered in condensing appliances. [Pg.275]

Thus, even under Regime 2a, the manufacturer will set in house limits (IHL) that are sufficiently narrow to reduce the risk of a recall from market (and all the attendant publicity) to very low levels. (See Fig. 2.13.) The risk resides in the possibility that a customer or a regulatory body reanalyzes samples and declares fails even if the manufacmrer s QC lab found complies. Many things could be at fault in either location, such as equipment, operator training, availability of proper standards, etc., but once a suspicion is raised in public, industrial science takes a back seat. [Pg.65]

In this context, Benson and Ponton declare that while the chemical industry has made considerable achievements in reactor performance, safety and control, comparable to those in the microelectronics business, this success is by no means evident to the public, in deep contrast to the latter [139], It is said that this is mainly and in a way simply due to the visual recognition of chemical production plants. From a distance and for somebody outside the field, the chemical plants of the late 1940s and the early 1990s look virtually similar, whereas one is able immediately to see the big differences in, e.g., television sets and automobiles. Hence it is not evident that notable improvements were made over the decades. [Pg.82]

No broad study of tetraethyl lead was conducted. According to Kehoe, It was thought that these necessarily extensive studies should not be repeated at present, at public expense, but that they should be continued at the expense of the industry most concerned. Kehoe proudly declared later, The problem [of tetraethyl lead s toxicity] therefore was left to a very substantial extent in our hands, where it has remained ever since. Such cooperative arrangements were typical of the 1920s in lieu of direct government regulation, industrial groups volunteered to collect technical information about the air and water pollution they caused. [Pg.94]

During the media blitz that followed, Patterson urged the public to buy Chicken of the Sea tuna because the Van Camp Sea Food Company s molded steel cans were lead-free. With characteristic bluntness, Patterson lambasted a host of government laboratories from the Environmental Protection Agency and its Bureau of Foods to the National Marine Fisheries Service and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Asked if any other laboratories agreed with his findings, Patterson declared loftily that scientific questions are not determined by majority vote. [Pg.193]

However, the corporationformedto implement this declaration ofinterdependence has failed to provide information to the public, news media, local, state and national political representatives, or others. There will be no level playing field for use of nuclear technology unless there is a well-coordinated national effort to provide accurate information to the public and to correct misinformation. [Pg.75]

To declare conflicting interests. It is not unusual to find oneself amid a conflict of interests between individual welfare and social welfare, which do not necessarily amount to fraud or malpractice, but which it is desirable to make public - for example by making explicit reference to sources of funding - thus enabling the users of research to judge for themselves how important it is. [Pg.183]

In the last 20 years, an increased number of enterohemorrhagic diarrhea outbreaks have been caused by highly virulent E. coli strains. EHEC are capable of causing serious complications such as hemolytic uremic syndrome in children and vascular disease in elderly people. E. coli serotype 0157 H7 has been the primary cause of outbreaks of EHEC, but other serotypes such as 026 and Olll are also a major public health concern. The Center for Disease Control has calculated that E. coli 0157 H7 is responsible for more than 70,000 infections and 60 deaths, and other EHEC strains cause approximately 36,000 illnesses and 30 deaths every year in the USA (Mead et al., 1999). In 1994 E. coli 0157 H7 was legally declared an adulterant in ground beef in the USA (USDA/FSIS Directive 10,010.1, 2004). Since then... [Pg.182]

Note how some customers are just too embarrassed to return and publicly declare it doesn t work. They silently blame their own lack of skills or their bad PCB layout and move on. They assume this huge and famous company couldn t be all that wrong But how very convenient that assumption is for some, they really have no idea. It turns out that thinking engineers was actually the last thing they ever had in mind ... [Pg.304]

Hall then left for a half-hour. The war-cabinet meeting had broken up, but he was able to discuss the compromise with Eden. By Hall, Eden sent word that the compromise might be accepted if "the categories of Jews were limited, in the public declaration, to those specified in the Hungarian offer."... [Pg.206]

Mr. Minskoff In March 1944, the President of the United States made a public declaration stating that, "In one of the blackest crimes of history, begun by the Nazis in the days of peace, and multiplied in time of war, the wholesale and systematic murder of Jews goes on unabated.". . . Mr. Mann, the text of that statement was repeated... [Pg.223]

This was the moment for Ilgner to flare up, to fling down the explosive publicity releases piled high on his lap. But his stubby fingers, like a worm wriggling on a hook, had been scribbling invisible declarations on the sub-committee s report. And then the red embarrassment left his face. He said ... [Pg.270]

This declaration of faith should have resounded in the Palace of Justice. No playwright could have conceived a more inspiring tragedy than the Farben judges, had they stood on the ashes of that other tyranny and exhorted free institutions to rise from their sleep. Such action alone could not have rescued our foreign policy from the fear on which it bases its appeal to public opinion, but it might have helped an alert public opinion to have seen its main current. [Pg.362]
