Matrix Operation

Matrix addition. The sum B + C of two matrices B and C having the same order is obtained by adding the corresponding elements in B and C. That is, [Pg.88]

When B is a row vector, or when C is a column vector, we denote this as a matrix-vector multiplication. [Pg.89]

We also define the matrix polynomial product, using the symbol o as the operator  [Pg.89]

We will use the matrix polynomial product in the context of DWT factorisation (see Chapter 7). [Pg.89]

Two matrices, [A] and [B], can be added only if they have the same number of rows and columns, respectively. Then, the sum [C] is obtained by adding the corresponding elements of [A] and [B]  [Pg.470]

The difference of two matrices is obtained by subtraction of the corresponding elements of [A] and [B]  [Pg.470]

The simplest form of matrix multiplication is the product of a scalar, s, and a matrix, [A], wherein all elements of [A] are multiplied by s  [Pg.470]

The product, [A][B], of two matrices is defined only when the number of rows in [B] equals the number of columns in [A], Here, [B] is said to be premultiplied by [A] or, alternatively, [A] is said to be postmultiplied by [B]. The product, [A][B], is obtained by first multiplying each element of the i row of [A] by the corresponding element of the j column of [B] and then adding those results  [Pg.471]

For a more complicated [B] matrix that has, say, n columns whereas [A] has m rows (remember [A] must have p columns and [B] must have p rows), the [C] matrix will have m rows and n columns. That is, the multiplication in Equations (A.21) and (A.22) is repeated as many times as there are columns in [B]. Note that, although the product [A][B] can be found as in Equation (A.21), the product [B][A] is not simultaneously defined unless [B] and [A] have the same number of rows and columns. Thus, [A] cannot be premultiplied by [B] if [A][B] is defined unless [B] and [A] are square. Moreover, even if both [A][B] and [B][A] are defined, there is no guarantee that [A][B] = [B][A]. That is, matrix multiplication is not necessarily commutative. [Pg.471]

The Gauss (or Gauss-Jordan) elimination can be applied as well to matrix A. This is equivalent to performing the elementary operations with columns instead of rows we then speak of column elimination, whereas in the former case we can speak of row elimination to be more explicit. Notice that if in particular K - M in (B.7.2 or 3) (hence if no row is annulled by the elimination), we have also rankA = Af by (B.7.8). In that case, we say that the matrix is of full row rank. In analogy if, by column elimination (thus by row elimination on A [N, M]) we obtain N nonnull columns, we say that matrix A is of full column rank, thus rankA = N. [Pg.544]

The reader is certainly also familiar with the notion of matrix product (say) BA, where B is AT x M and k is M x N. Observe that according to the representation theorem, the product represents composition of linear maps.
