To allow flexibility, the database manager must also perform point addition or deletion. However, the abihty to create a point type or to add or delete attributes of a point type is not normally required because, unlike other data processing systems, a process control system normally involves a fixed number of point types and related attributes. For example, analog and binary input and output types are required for process I/O points. Related attributes for these point types include tag names, values, and hardware addresses. Different system manufacturers may define different point types using different data structures. We will discuss other commonly used point types and attributes as they appear.

The basic components include a Nd YAG pulsed laser system which is coaxial with a He Ne pilot laser and visible light optical system. The brand file and random smoking plans are central to the whole automation design philosophy. The brand file was the first segment of the system to undergo major revision when the data handhng moved from the bureau to the in-house computer. The information on the brand file not only enables an analyst to monitor certain administrative requirements on behalf of the customer, but also allows the file itself to accompHsh most of the control functions required by the data processing system. The software to drive this expanded brand file runs interactively from a terminal in the laboratory and gives the analyst the abihty to update and maintain the file, and exert a measure of control over the whole system. 

The OPA reagent for HPLC is prepared according to the method of Benson and Hare (21). The fluorescence reaction is performed in a 55 C water bath. OPA reacts with the guanidino group of TTX presumably to form a fluorescent product, l-alkylthio-2-alkylisoindole (22, 23). TTX is monitored at 453 nm with 332-nm excitation.
