After the skimmer, the ions must be prepared for mass analysis, and electronic lenses in front of the analyzer are used to adjust ion velocities and flight paths. The skimmer can be considered to be the end of the interface region stretching from the end of the plasma flame. Some sort of light stop must be used to prevent emitted light from the plasma reaching the ion collector in the mass analyzer (Figure 14.2). 

Aqueous hydrogen peroxide is sold in grades ranging from 3 to 86 wt %, most often containing 35, 50, and 70 wt % H2O2. In the United States, the only use for 86% H2O2 (ca 1994) is for attitude (flight path behavior) control of space craft, etc. This minor amount is imported. 

In quadrupole-based SIMS instruments, mass separation is achieved by passing the secondary ions down a path surrounded by four rods excited with various AC and DC voltages. Different sets of AC and DC conditions are used to direct the flight path of the selected secondary ions into the detector. The primary advantage of this kind of spectrometer is the high speed at which they can switch from peak to peak and their ability to perform analysis of dielectric thin films and bulk insulators. The ability of the quadrupole to switch rapidly between mass peaks enables acquisition of depth profiles with more data points per depth, which improves depth resolution. Additionally, most quadrupole-based SIMS instruments are equipped with enhanced vacuum systems, reducing the detrimental contribution of residual atmospheric species to the mass spectrum.

The airline distance from Philadelphia to Frankfurt is about 6.6 X 103 km, depending to some extent on the flight path followed. What is the average speed of the plane, in kilometers per hour ... 

Detection of Gunshot Residues on Floor Surfaces In another study at the Pennsylvania State University (Ref 20), gunshot residues from firing tests were assayed in order to establish distribution patterns of Ba and Sb on surfaces below the flight path of the buliet... 

Firing tests with the other cal handgnns indicated distinguishable differences in the overall distribution patterns of discharge residues from different handguns. This unique distribution pattern of residues deposited immediately below the flight path of the bullet results from the cloud of combustion products emitted thru the barrel of/the weapon. 

Nondestructive NAA can thus be used for the detection and measurement of Ba, Sb (and also Cu) from residue samples collected from the floor surface after the single firing of a handgun. By constructing a unique distribution pattern of these residues, it is possible to establish the flight path of the bullet and the proximity of the gun with respect to the target. The development of this information, particularly in the absence of a firearm, a bullet or an eyewitness, can be of considerable value in criminal investigations... 

Often, an important consideration in the definition of a missile s mission is the ability to stop the rocket motor upon demand. Such capability provides the opportunity to exercise control over the flight path and to make corrections where necessary. Solid propellants do not readily lend themselves to start-stop applications because the oxidizer and fuel are already mixed, and... 

In this instrnment, the final stage of the triple quadrnpole is replaced by an orthogonal time-of-fiight (ToF) mass analyser, as shown in Fignre 3.10. The con-fignration is typical of the latest generation of ToF instrnments in which a nnmber of reflectrons, in this case two, are used to increase the flight path of the ions and thns increase the resolution that may be achieved. 

The basic components include a Nd YAG pulsed laser system which is coaxial with a He Ne pilot laser and visible light optical system. The latter system enables the analytical area of interest to be located. The TOF-MS has a flight path of 2m in length, with an ion detection system that includes an electron multiplier detector, a multichannel transient recorder, together with a computer acquisition and data processing system. 

Mass spectrometry is not a new technique. The separation of charged particles based on mass, charge, and flight path has been known since J. J.

Bumblebee males mark objects on their flight paths with secretions from the labial glands [ 126,127]. Although these marks can be attractive to both males and virgin queens, and are chemically well characterized in several species, the specific components responsible for attraction remain unknown. 

It is possible to achieve a weightless condition for a limited time in an airplane by flying in a circular arc above the earth (like a rainbow). If the plane flies at 650 mph, what should the radius of the flight path be (in miles) to achieve weightlessness ... 

The mass accuracy and resolution of TOF analyzers was improved by the reflectron design in which traveling ions are reflected by an ion mirror and are turned around in their flight paths.
