Cyproterone acetate (CPA) is a progestational antiandrogen that blocks the androgen receptors. It is combined with ethinyl estradiol in an oral contraceptive formulation, which is indicated in female acne patients with a high level of seborrhea, therapy resistant papulo-pustular acne or acne conglobata not responding to other treatments.

The most recent meta-analysis of 27 randomized trials in 8275 patients (4803 treated with flutamide, 1683 treated with nilutamide, and 1784 treated with cyproterone) comparing maximal androgen blockade with conventional medical or surgical castration showed a small survival benefit at 5 years for those treated with flutamide or nilutamide (27.6%) compared with those treated with castration alone (24.7% p = 0.0005).40... 

Christiaens et al. (2004) measured cyproterone acetate (CPA), a drug used to treat prostate carcinoma, in human plasma. A LiChrosphere RP-4 (25 x 2 mm inner diameter, 25 /an, Merck KGaA) cartridge was coupled with an OminiSpher C18 column (100 x 2 mm inner diameter, 3 /an) and 30 jiL plasma was injected directly. The lower limit of quantitation (LOQ) was 300 pg/mL. Recovery was 100%.

Vasopressin plays a major role in the control of blood pressure, which is probably essential for vasocongestion or erection. cOxytocin gene expression occurs in ovary and testes, but the exact functions remain unknown. dProgestins, such as cyproterone acetate, are used clinically as anti-androgens (Kravitz, et ah, 1995). 

Cilest is a combined hormonal contraceptive that contains ethinylestradiol and norgestimate. These products may cause nausea, especially on commencement of therapy. Other side-effects that may occur in decreasing order of probability include fluid retention, reduced menstrual loss and photosensitivity. Acne is not commonly associated with combined hormonal contraceptive. Hormone therapy consisting of ethinylestradiol and cyproterone may be used for the management acne in women.
