Cyproterone Alcohol

Normal sexual activity is associated with ovulation in most female mammals. Compounds affecting this process can adversely affect female libido. Ovarian failure induced by xenobiotic compounds has been associated with a decrease in libido in women. Certain types of oral contraceptives as well as drugs of abuse (methadone, cannabis, alcohol) cause decreases in female libido. The treatment for hirsutism, excessive growth of hair in both normal and abnormal locations, is the compound cyproterone acetate. It is an antiandrogen that has the side effect of severely decreasing libido in women. [Pg.348]

Excessive alcohol consumption may reduce the antiandrogenic effect of cyproterone acetate in the treatment of hypersexuality, but the relevance of this in prostatic carcinoma is not known there seems to be no evidence that normal social amounts of alcohol interact. [Pg.60]

The suggested reasons for this reaction are unknown, but it may possibly be due to several factors. These include enzyme induction by the alcohol, which could possibly increase the metabolism and clearance of cyproterone inereased sexual drive eaused by alcohol, which might oppose the ef-feets of eyproterone and reduced compliance by alcoholic patients who forget to take their tablets while drinking to excess. ... [Pg.60]

It seems therefore that cyproterone may not be effective in alcoholic patients, but there is nothing to suggest that the effects of cyproterone are op-... [Pg.60]

Drug-akohol interactions An apparently unprecedented case has been reported in which cyproterone induced disulfiram-like interference with the metabolism of alcohol [107 ]. [Pg.872]
