A sequential cutting study was performed on 8 fresh-frozen human knees. The femoral attachment of the ACL was divided into a central area of dense fibers which directly inserted into the femur and into the anterior and posterior fanlike extension areas (Fig. 1.4). The ACL fibers were cut sequentially from the bone in 2, 4, and 2 stages in the posterior fanlike area, the central dense area, and the anterior fanlike area, respectively. Each knee was mounted in a robotic joint testing system at 0-90 of flexion tibial anteroposterior 6 mm translations and 10 or 15 of internal rotation were applied. The reduction in restraining force or moment was measured after each cut. [Pg.9]

In this study there was more than a 50% reduction in weight gain of the chicks fed the dried alfalfa juice prepared from the first cutting of high saponin alfalfa and nearly the same reduction in the gain of the chicks using the second cutting study. [Pg.260]

Mass spectrometry allows analysis by hydrocarbon family for a variety of petroleum cuts as deep as vacuum distillates since we have seen that the molecules must be vaporized. The study of vacuum residues can be conducted by a method of direct introduction which we will address only briefly because the quantitative aspects are ek r metiy difficult to master. One has seen that the number of individual components in a hydrocarbon cut increases rapidly with its boiling point. It is thereby out of the question to resolve such a cut to its individual components instead of the analysis by family given by mass spectrometry, one may prefer a distribution by type of carbon. This can be done by infrared absorption spectrometry which also has other applications in the petroleum industry. Extended defects range from well characterized dislocations to grain boundaries, interfaces, stacking faults, etch pits, D-defects, misfit dislocations (common in epitaxial growth), blisters induced by H or He implantation etc. Microscopic studies of such defects are very difficult, and crystal growers use years of experience and trial-and-error teclmiques to avoid or control them. Some extended defects can change in unpredictable ways upon heat treatments. Others become gettering centres for transition metals, a phenomenon which can be desirable or not, but is always difficult to control. Extended defects are sometimes cleverly used. For example, the smart-cut process relies on the controlled implantation of H followed by heat treatments to create blisters. Based on tests with laboratory animals, aniline may cause cancer. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the Chemical Industry Institute of Toxicology (CUT) conducted lifetime rodent feeding studies, and both studies found tumors of the spleen at high dosage (100 —300 mg/kg pet day of aniline chloride). CUT found no tumors at the 10—30 mg/kg per day feeding rates. The latter value is equivalent to a human 8-h inhalation level of 17—50 ppm aniline vapor. In a short term (10-d) inhalation toxicity test by Du Pont, a no-effect level of 17 ppm aniline vapor was found for rats. At high levels (47—87 ppm), there were blood-related effects which were largely reversible within a 13-d recovery period (70). [Pg.233]

The membrane enzyme luciferase, responsible for light emission in fireflies, is sensitive to anesthetics (20,21), and the concentrations of inhalational agents which inhibit luciferase are the same as those which cause general anesthesia. Studies of various classes of inhalational agents and luciferase demonstrated that above a certain chain length in a homologous series, a point is reached where higher members are not anesthetic. The lower volatihty of JP-8 is a significant factor in the U.S. Air Force conversion from JP-4, since fires and explosions under both combat and ordinary handling conditions have been attributed to the use of JP-4.
