Customizing charts

This chapter shows several ways to plot multiple data series, and how to customize charts, create charts with multiple axes and link spreadsheet data to chart text. 

Use the procedure in the following box to define a custom chart format and make that the default format. The new chart format will remain in effect through all subsequent sessions of Excel. 

To Make a Custom Chart Format the Default Chart Format... 

To add the selected chart s format to the list and make it the default chart format for all subsequent charts, press the Set As Default Chart button. In either case you ll be asked to give a name to the new custom chart type. 

Finally, the laboratory expends significant effort communicating results to both internal and external customers. Production, quaUty assurance, and purchasing all have various information needs ranging from the simple pass /fail decisions to statistical summaries of the data and suppHer product quahty. Customers expect to receive lot analyses in the form of a COA and often also want their own product-specific information on the document as well. This information can automatically be appHed to the COA if entered into the LIMS. Often, a quaUty-conscious customer wants information about the product in the form of process capabiUty or control charts. Using LIMS, these charts can be provided on demand. 

An important part of the decision-making tool flow chart (see Fig. 1) is the redefinition of the specifications by the sensor customer after the surveying and testing of commercial sensor systems. This process almost always involves a downgrading of the expectations of the sensor customer, but it can also force a reaUstic evaluation of what sensor information really needs to be made available and at what cost. 

The preparation of a matrix and the subsequent evaluation of the hazards identified can lead to a qualitative judgment of process risk and to the identification of available pathways to reduce that risk. Software is available to assist in making and maintaining interactionlike matrices. One example is a database shell called CHEMPAT (AIChE, 1995). When CHEMPAT is customized by the user, a compatibility chart is produced based on user-supplied chemical information. 

Documenting the Process. The net effect of these steps is a process description, defined in terms of customers and suppliers and their interaction. Next, the team can summarize that description in the form of a process flowchart, to illustrate the roles and responsibilities of each process stakeholder (see Figure 6-8). This chart provides the basis for developing standard operating procedures, or other process documentation, that the company can incorporate into existing practices. 

The controlling authority must, well before the start of site erection, draw up a material delivery and progress chart and see that all subcontractors (and the customer) are in agreement and that they are kept informed of any changes [31]. 

Once analytical results have been produced, invariably a certain amount of manipulation is necessary to translate the results into information that can be understood by the customer. The reporting analyst may have to sort and process a large and varied amount of information in order to produce a small number of final answers. Data from standards may be used to produce calibration curves or calibrate instrument response. Results from quality control samples will have been plotted on charts to ensure that the system was working satisfactorily at the time the measurements were made. Sample data will be quantified by comparison with the standards and suitable corrections made. Then, checks may be made to confirm the results by examining the answers to look for any obvious wrong data. It is... 

This section outlines the information that must be provided by the contractor to a customer on an on-going basis throughout the project. The most critical aspect is the provision of Internal Quality Control (IQC) control charts thus ensuring that the customer has confidence that the contractor is in analytical control . 

The time interval for customer visits (e.g. once every three months, or as otherwise appropriate) and for submission of control charts. 

Operator interface with system is via a two position operator s console. Each operator has two working color CRTs and a custom keyboard. A fifth single CRT dedicated to alarm displays is shared by both operator positions. Additional equipment includes multi-pen chart recorders, alarm logger and report typer. The operator monitors operations via continuously updated custom graphic displays, status and alarm reports on the CRTs and can call up displays and execute control commands by using special function push buttons in the keyboard. 

Balloons are sold according to the chart above. If a customer buys one balloon at a time, the cost is 1.00 per balloon. If a customer buys ten balloons at a time, the cost is 0.90 per balloon. If Carlos wants to buy 2,000 balloons, how much money does he save by buying 1,000 balloons at a time rather than ten balloons at a time ... 

If it takes a while to get replacements, double the amounts of the preceding parts and add a detector flow cell, another Ci8 column, and a full pump head. If you are going to Antarctica for the season, an extra injector, pump, detector, strip chart recorder, and a case each of strip chart paper and pens might be nice. One of my customers found that his back-order time in Little America (Antarctica) was 14 months.
