There are limited options for curative control allowed under organic agriculture guidelines, which vary from country to country. Curatives are inputs to the crop production system that are applied after a pest or pathogen has established in the crop, and threatens to reduce yields if action is not taken. Table 4.1 provides a representative list of botanically derived pesticides, microbial agents and other naturally available materials typically approved under organic standards. These materials vary in their toxicity levels and non-target effects.

There are two major chemical areas of health concern in the polyurethane industry. The first is isocyanates, in their free form as a liquid or in the vapor form. The second is amines. One curative, MOCA (CAS number 101-14-4), is classed as a suspect carcinogen in most parts of the world and is subject to many rules and regulations regarding its use. MOCA is technically a good curative, but it is a classified Class 2 suspect carcinogen and is listed in the safety regulations as a chemical along with such materials as asbestos. MOCA has to be used under a strict code of practice. 

These lists are not complete as it is recognised that rubber contains two important ingredients (antidegradants and curatives) that are reactive and so produce reaction and breakdown products. Recent work carried out at Rapra for the Food Standards Agency has shown that there are more than 1000 of these products originating from the 200 curative and antidegradant compounds in the Council of Europe rubber resolution inventory list.
