A special notation is used to describe surface reconstructions and surface overlayers and is described in books on surface crystallography (Clarke, 1985). The lattice vectors a and b of an overlayer are described in terms of the substrate lattice vectors a and b. If the lengths la I = mlal and Ib l = nibl, the overlayer is described as mXn. Thus, a commensurate layer in register with the underlying atoms is described as 1 X 1. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) can provide detailed stmcture of zeolites. I use the word characterize or characterization for stmctural study on a unit cell scale, such as various kind of stmctural defects and basic stmctural units, and determine or determination for obtaining atomic coordinates within the unit cell for all the atoms of a crystal. A simple text or reviews for stmctural characterization of porous materials can be found in a book or review articles [1-6]. Several examples of carbenoid ion-radicals are discussed within this book. A silylene anion-radical preparation and properties is exemplified here. Scheme 2.5 shows the path to this species. Tetrakis(di-tert-butytmethylsilyl)disilylene was reduced by lithium or sodium salt of naphthalene anion-radical in THF at 78°C and then 12-crown-4 was added to the resulting reaction mixture. The silylene anion-radical was obtained as the corresponding alkali salt. Low temperature crystallography is a discipline deeply entangled with the techniques of X-ray diffraction on cooled samples and very often cryo-crystallog-raphy and low temperature dijfraction are used as synonymous.
