Crushing plants

Grizzly Screens These consist of a set of parallel bars held apart by spacers at some predetermined opening. Bars are frequently made of manganese steel to reduce wear. A grizzly is widely used before a primaiy crusher in rock- or ore-crushing plants to remove the fines before the ore or rock enters the crusher. It can be a stationaiy set of bars or a vibrating screen. [Pg.1771]

Environmental odors can also play a role in interspecific interactions such as preying. The domestic dog uses cues from disturbed soil and crushed plants when tracking and they can be trained to follow tracks that lack scent. When following a scent, such as a human track, they can be diverted by another scent crossing the first pathway. The choice made by the dog is influenced by the odors and cues available at any point (Most and Bruckner, 1936 see p. 414). [Pg.55]

Most and Bruckner (1936) found human tracks to be complex. A track contains a human species odor and an individual odor, both extruded through boots, but also the odors of crushed plants, disturbed soil, and leather or other shoe material. Dogs still tracked correctly after removal of one or several of these components. To separate the track components, the authors built a chair lift and a track wheel (Fig. 13.5). The rim of the metal wheel (approximately 2m in diameter) carried raised replicas of shoes at stride intervals. Pulled over the terrain, the wheel makes a track of crushed plants and disturbed soil without human scent. The lift consists of a chair suspended on a steel cable about 1.5 m above the ground. Although a person riding this chair leaves no foot imprints or disturbed soil, he/she still sheds odorous rafts of skin cells. A trained dog uses one or the other of these track components, as terrain and surface change. [Pg.415]

The organic compounds available to us today are those present in living things and those formed over millions of years from dead things. In earlier times, the organic compounds known from nature were those in the essential oils that could be distilled from plants and the alkaloids that could be extracted from crushed plants with acid. Menthol is a famous example of a flavouring compound from the essential oil of spearmint and ds-ja.smone an example of a perfume distilled from jasmine flowers. [Pg.3]

The object of chemical extraction is to separate the psychoactive alkaloids from the plant material. This is done by first simmering the crushed plant in an acidified water bath, which converts the alkaloids into their salt form. After filtration, the plant pulp may be discarded. To extract the alkaloids from the water, the remaining liquid is made basic and an organic solvent is added. The alkaloids will migrate into this solvent, which can then be drawn off and poured into a shallow dish.The solvent will quickly evaporate, leaving behind the alkaloids in pure crystalline form (you should be so lucky ), or more commonly, as a relatively impure gummy compound. [Pg.229]

Occurrence M. are widely distributed in the plant kingdom.
