Clear liquid velocity (ft/sec) through the downcomer is then found by multiplying DL by 0.00223. The correlation is not valid if Pl - pv is less than 301b/ft (very high pressure systems). For foaming systems, DL should be multiplied by 0.7. Frank recommends segmental downcomers of at least 5% of total column cross-sectional area, regardless of the area obtained by this correlation. 

It can be calculated as usual for SEP, see Eq. (6.98) by use of test samples. It is also possible to estimate the PRESS-value on the basis of standard samples only applying cross validation by means of the so-called hat matrix H (Faber and Kowalski [1997a, b] Frank and Todeschini [1994]) ... 

Although this sometimes occurs through the operation of Frank-Read sources it is not generally observed. What does generally occur is similar, but more complex. The process is called multiple-cross-glide, and was proposed by Koehler (1952). Its importance was hrst demonstrated experimentally by Johnston and Gilman (1959). In addition to its existence, they showed that the process produces copious dislocation dipoles which are responsible for deformation-hardening.

In a cross-sectional study of workers exposed to 1,1,1-trichloroethane in two textile mills (for 149/151, duration of exposure more than 12 months, for 135/151, estimated current exposure level (50-250 ppm [273-1365 mg/m ])), no differences in the reported symptoms, electrocardiograms or laboratory examinations pertaining to liver function were observed (Kramer et al., 1978). Case reports describing hepatic damage after exposure to 1,1,1-trichloroethane have been published (Cohen Frank, 1994). 

Recently, various heteronuclear X—Y double resonance approaches have helped to increase the informational content of static and MAS NMR spectra of such systems. Frank and coworkers136 demonstrate, for the first time, that cross-polarization from 31P to insensitive 29Si nuclei is possible in conjunction with MAS results in significant sensitivity enhancements, and can provide important insights into the structure of inorganic... 

Simulation of frank SSBs and base damage as expressed by ALS has been achieved with the RADACK (RADiation attACK) procedure (Begusova et al. 2001b). This takes into account that the various nucleobases and the hydrogens of the sugar moiety react with different rate constants. The effect is shown in Fig. 12.4, where B-DNA is represented in a space-filling model with only the reactive atoms represented, with the same atoms but with sizes according to their OH cross-section or with the non-reactive atoms re-added. It is the last structure that- OH "encounters" in the RADACK procedure.

Intermediate Least Squares regression (ILS) is an extension of the Partial Least Squares (PLS) algorithm where the optimal variable subset model is calculated as intermediate to PLS and stepwise regression, by two parameters whose values are estimated by cross-validation [Frank, 1987]. The first parameter is the number of optimal latent variables and the second is the number of elements in the weight vector w set to zero. This last parameter (ALIM) controls the number of selected variables by acting on the weight vector of each mth latent variable as the following ...
