Credit approach

Although the present Good Workmanship approach actually gives conventional NDT methods the credit they deserve (their capabilities are well-used), there should nevertheless be a certainty beyond reasonable doubt that an accepted weld is fit for service. Many years of industrial experience have demonstrated that this certainty statistically exists. We are not doing things totally wrong. [Pg.947]

A low pressure semi-regenerative unit provides yields that approach those obtained in cyclic Powerforming but with savings in investment. For smaller units and moderate severities, the low pressure semi-regenerative unit would likely be the most attractive alternative if selectivity improvement credits are sufficiently high. [Pg.58]

Both the.se methods have weaknesses. The historical data, implicit in both, may not be appropriate for the component in the assumed environment for the particular circumslances considered and may be irrelevant because of design rectification based on knowledge of previous failure. The broad approach may then be unduly pessimistic. On the other hand, the fault tree may fail to identify a primary cause which may have been missed by the plant designer to underestimate the probability of failure. The fault tree approach also takes credit for the preventative measures which may not be present in practice. The broad approach is likely to overestimate the risks because of insufficient account of preventative measures. The PSA team used the broad approach, recognizing that more accuracy may be attained by detailed industry studies. [Pg.433]

Some authors argue that the basic approach underlying emission reduction credit systems like the Kyoto Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) can be extended to create linkage opportunities in diverse emission control systems in ways that do not necessarily suffer from the shortfalls of the current CDM. Moreover, while emission reduction credit systems are designed to work with MB systems like tradable permits, they describe ways in which it can interact with tax systems as well as certain regulatory systems [22]. [Pg.39]

Many people deserve credit for their assistance in producing this textbook. It has been more than a few years since this book was first written, and a list of acknowledgements would approach the size of a small telephone directory— there are too many good people to thank directly. [Pg.331]

The purpose of this chapter is to review particular aspects of these two interpretations of the reproduction schema in the light of the macro monetary model developed in previous chapters. How do these interpretations relate to our emphasis in the reproduction schema upon the importance of money, credit and the multiplier And what is the distinctive contribution of the macro monetary model relative to these golden age interpretations By re-interpreting these approaches through the lens of our macro monetary model, the objective is to explore in more depth the role of the reproduction schema in Marxian economic theory. [Pg.64]

Mark s first assignment was, with Brill, to set up two X-ray tubes in order to study the structure of simple compounds. Mark credits this approach to Herzog and Polanyi, and has said that it was a key to his later successes in the polymer areas. "If we had started", Mark summarized over a half century later, "with cellulose and rubber, and not zinc and tin, we would have failed." However, in 1922 their problems were even more basic. Neither Mark nor Brill had any experience in the fledging study of X-rays. [Pg.15]

While we believe our discussions of nitramine and nitrate ester synthesis to be comprehensive, it would be quite impossible to have a comprehensive discussion of aromatic nitration in this short chapter - published studies into aromatic nitration run into many tens of thousands. The purpose of this chapter is primarily to discuss the methods used for the synthesis of polynitroarylene explosives. Undoubtedly the most important and direct method for the synthesis of polynitroarylenes involves direct electrophilic nitration of the parent aromatic hydrocarbon. This work gives an overview of aromatic nitration but the discussion doesn t approach mechanistic studies in detail. Readers with more specialized interests in aromatic nitration are advised to consult several important works published in this area which give credit to this important reaction class. The use of polynitroarylenes as explosives and their detailed industrial synthesis has been expertly covered by Urbanski in Volumes 1 and 4 of Chemistry and Technology of Explosives ... [Pg.125]

In the classical era in Europe, the theory and practice of chemistry were pursued mainly by the ancient Greeks, who made many important discoveries in metallurgy in particular and who are also credited with proposing the earliest version of the atomic theory. The Greek chemical tradition declined when mysticism displaced the observational approach in the second century of the Common Era, and subsequently was largely lost in Europe after the fall of Rome in 410 c.E. In the 11th. century c.E., the quasiscience of alchemy returned to Europe via the Arabs, who also introduced Persian, Indian, and Chinese influences. [Pg.1]

The references to the literature constituted a separate problem. Anything even approaching completeness was out of the question. My selection is based on the desire to be helpful to the reader. To stress this aspect references are given at the bottom of the page, where the reader can find them without having to search for them. My aim will be achieved if they are sufficient as a guide to further relevant literature. Unavoidably a number of important contributions are not explicitly but only indirectly credited. I apologize to their authors and beg them to consider that this is a textbook rather than a historical account. [Pg.466]

CAUTION No one with a pacemaker should approach within 30 cm of an NMR instrument. Higher specification instruments require further caution. If in doubt, consult a doctor and the equipment manufacturer. Keep magnetic storage devices (including credit cards) away from the measurement coil. [Pg.567]
