Cosmetic products botanicals

Plant-derived polyphenols or flavonoids have been widely used in cosmetic formulation. In skin care products, botanical extracts rich in polyphenols are usually added as free-radical scavengers. The most popular examples are botanical extracts from green tea. 

Protein Risk Assessment The first step is to identify the source of the extract and the amount of protein it contains. The total protein content is needed to estimate potential exposure upon the use of the product containing the extract. A tiered approach can be followed to determine the level of protein in the botanical extract. The complexity and cost of the method used increase with the tier. Therefore only lower tier methods are usually sufficient for botanicals and naturals used at very low levels in the cosmetic product. For those botanicals or natural extracts for which there is a relatively high prevalence of sensitization, highest tier methods are recommended. 

This nomenclature was officially adopted by the other two main legislations on cosmetic products over the world, i.e. in the EU and Japan frameworks, in 1996 and 2001, respectively, although a few discrepancies can be observed in case of colouring agents (see Section 4.1), botanical extracts, and a few trivial names. Nevertheless, the CTFA is woik-ing closely with the European Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association (COLIPA) and with Japan s Cosmetic Industry Association (JCIA) in order to harmonise these final discrepancies. 

Essential oils are also influenced by legislation that regulates specific products that may contain these oils, e,g,. the U.S. Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act and the European Community Cosmetic Directive. Essential oils would not be anticipated to be of environmental concern, considering that they originate from botanical sources, Thus, natural processes exist to degrade essential oils and recycle their components effectively in the environment,... 

The complexity of the aqueous products situation can be illustrated by Rose Water. It is a long established product with a history of applications in cosmetics, skincare and culinary preparations. Initially it may be produced from different botanical species e.g. typically Wild rose (Rosa canina), Damask rose (Rosa damascena) and Cabbage rose (Rosa centifolia). 

In the United States, the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) of 1994 (United States Public Law 103-417) amended the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act by defining as a dietary supplement any product (other than tobacco) that contains a vitamin, mineral, herb or other botanical, or amino acid and is intended as a supplement to the diet. Food is considered safe by definition, but new foods or food additives must be demonstrated to be generally recognized as... 

Experiments with model porous silicon powders and membranes prepared by anodization are summarized in this review. Although such studies have shown the potential of porosified silicon in selected applications, these cosmetic tests will need to be repeated with less expensive forms, such as those derived from biogenic silicas (Batchelor et al. 2012),if the promising technical effects seen are to be translated into commercial products. The creation of cosmetic-grade porous silicon from plants looks particularly attractive, since there is great consumer interest in botanically derived actives and formulations.
