This brings us to some very basic principles of cost accounting. One industrial facility that has done exhaust system retrofit is the Eldec Corporation, an aerospace electronic manufacturer. With the help of the local utility, Eldec implemented a control project to reduce exhaust air by up to 30% for the first shift and 60% for the rest of the time and achieved great savings with one year simple payback. The project closed the exhaust inlets with dampers and controlled the exhaust fan speeds with variable frequency drives (VFD). The exhaust fans are now monitored and controlled by the building direct digital controls (DDC) system to ensure proper operation and save energy.

A small but diverse team of personnel is typically involved in the activities of the Project Identification and Definition Stage (refer to Figure 2.1). Representatives from groups such as process analytics, process control, project management, central engineering and production operations should populate the team in the first stage. In September 1933, the Soil Erosion Service, which later became the Soil Conservation Service, was created in the United States Department of the Interior (Simms, 1970). The next month on October 10, 1933, the first soil erosion control project of the Soil Erosion Service was established in Coon Valley, Wisconsin (Geiger and Keller, 1970). 

Pneumatic Controllers The pneumatic controller is an automatic controller that uses variable air pressure as input and output signals. An air supply is also required to power the mechanical components of the controller and provide an air source for the controller output signal. Pneumatic controllers were first available in the early 1940s but are now rarely used for large-scale industrial control projects. Pneumatic controllers are still used where cost, ruggedness, or the installation requires an all-pneumatic solution.

Yoshihisa Inoue is Professor of Chemistry, Osaka University, Japan, and Director of the ICORP Entropy Control Project, JST, Japan. The coauthor or coeditor of more than 300 scientific publications and books, he holds several patents. Professor Inoue headed the ERATO Photochirogenesis Project (1996-2001) and the ICORP Entropy Control Project (2002-2007), both supported by JST. He is recipient of the Japanese Photochemistry Association Award (1998) and the Molecular Chirality Award (2003). Professor Inoue received the B.S. (1972) and Ph.D. (1977) degrees in chemistry from Osaka University, Japan, and worked with N. J. Turro as a postdoctoral fellow at Columbia University (1978-1979).

This device causes a fixed rate of pesticide to mix with the water flowing through the hose to which it is attached. The mixture is expelled through a high-volume nozzle. These sprayers usually hold no more than one quart (one liter) of concentrated pesticide, but because the concentrate mixes with the water, they may deliver 20 gallons or more of finished spray solution before refilling. Figure 8.3 depicts a hose-end sprayer used for small pest control projects.

Other procedures and activities are directed to controlling project quality, cost and schedule. They must be included, at least in essence, in the protocol of all projects. 

The larger, the more capital-intensive, and the more centralized the schemes, the greater their appeal in terms of power and patronage.
