Early in the Corrective Action process, a decision may be made concerning whether or not containment is necessary to protect human health and the environment (HHE). If the release or threatened release presents danger to HHE, immediate action must be taken to halt migration. Under these circumstances, actions termed "Interim Measures" may be required, and excavation or containment measures may be directed by the regulatory agency. However, the Owner/Operator will be responsible for their implementation. In the event that containment is not required as an interim measure, containment may still be needed as part of the overall Corrective Action to halt the pollution migration if wastes or contaminants are to be left on-site. 

On-site containment measurements - made on a fume cupboard on a particularly exposed site showed that very large day-to-day variations in the degree of containment could be attributed to the wind blowing across the stack. A suitable design of stack termination and a high discharge velocity should reduce this problem. 

A data set containing measurements on a set of known samples and used to develop a calibration is called a training set. The known samples are sometimes called the calibration samples. A training set consists of an absorbance matrix containing spectra that are measured as carefully as possible and a concentration matrix containing concentration values determined by a reliable, independent referee method. 

NOTE It is important to distinguish between water in steam resulting from partial condensation of steam and that resulting from carryover of entrained BW. Even where steam does not contain measurable carryover from mechanical action, it may still contain volatile amines, ammonia, carbon dioxide, oxygen, sulfur gases, and silica. 

Some equilibrium constants are neither large nor small. As already mentioned, the equilibrium constant for the formation of N2 O4 from NO2 at 25 °C is 3.10. This moderate value indicates that an equilibrium mixture of NO2 and N2 O4 at 25 °C contains measurable amounts of each molecule. 

In Tobacco. At the time of harvesting, fresh tobacco leaves do not contain measurable amounts of nitrosamines (<5 ppb). However, these compounds are formed during curing, aging and fermentation. Their concentrations depend primarily on the content of proteins, alkaloids, agricultural chemicals and nitrate in the tobacco, as well as on the processing conditions which lead to the reduction of the nitrates. 

Installation of the pumping well is more time consuming than digging a trench. There is a lag period between the start of pumping, the formation of the depression cone, and containment of the plume. This limits its use as a rapid containment measure. The water table depression must be kept constant otherwise, if the water table is allowed to fluctuate, gasoline droplets may adhere to soil particles and get trapped below the water table, especially when the depth of the cone of depression gets lower.

Lutein and zeaxanthin are the dominant carotenoids in nonretinal eye tissue, and lycopene and p-carotene have been found in the ciliary body, which after the retina and the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) contains the highest quantity of carotenoids (Bernstein et al. 2001). The orbital adipose tissue also contains measurable quantities of lutein and p-carotene, and possibly other carotenoids as minor constituents (Sires et al. 2001). It is also interesting to note that lutein was recently identified in the vitreous body of human fetuses, 15-28 weeks old (Yakovleva et al. 2007). However, these results may have to be considered with caution, because the vitreous bodies were described as substantially being penetrated with hyaloid blood vessels, which could have contaminated the vitreous with blood.

Table II contains measured Rg/Rg from the experiment and calculated Rg/Rg from the phantom network model. Since, the functionality of these networks is not well known but is probably high, calculated data at several different functionalities are shown.

In general, the first generation of RBMPs only seems to contain measures of which the river basin managers have the long-time practical experience that they will work. Hence, it seems that no innovative, not yet fully proven, measures are implemented yet. 

Eggs of the American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus) from the Florida Everglades contained up to 2.9 mg/kg fresh weight of DDE and 0.86 mg/kg of polychlorinated biphenyls, but less than 0.02 mg mirex/kg (Hall et al. 1979). Livers of the deep sea fish (Antimora rostrata) collected from 1971 to 1974 from a depth of 2500 m off the U.S. east coast, contained measurable concentrations of DDT and its degradation products, and dieldrin, but no mirex (Barber and Warlen 1979). 

Concentrations of total PCBs — measured as Aroclors 1248, 1254, and 1260 — in adult freshwater fishes in the United States from noncontaminated sites declined between 1976 and 1984 (Table 24.9), and more than 90% of all analyzed samples contained measurable quantities of PCBs during this period (Schmitt et al. 1990). Total PCB concentrations in domestic freshwater fishes in 1986/87 from contaminated sites were as high as 124,000 pg/kg FW (USEPA 1992a). In general, total PCB concentrations in domestic freshwater fishes sampled between 1976 and 1984 were... 

Commercial PCB mixtures frequently contain impurities that may contribute to the 2,3,7,8-TCDD toxic equivalency factor. These impurities may include other PCBs, dioxins, dibenzofurans, naphthalenes, diphenyl ethers and toluenes, phenoxy and biphenyl anisoles, xanthenes, xanthones, anthracenes, and fluorenes (Jones etal. 1993). PCB concentrations in avian tissues sometimes correlate positively with DDE concentrations (Mora et al. 1993). Eggs of peregrine falcons (Falco peregrinus) from California, for example, contained measurable quantities of various organochlorine compounds, including dioxins, dibenzofurans, mirex, hexachlorobenzene, and / ,//-DDE at 7.1 to 26.0 mg/kg FW PCB 126 accounted for 83% of the 2,3,7,8-TCDD equivalents, but its interaction with other detectable organochlorine compounds is largely unknown (Jarman et al. 1993). 

Data from a single analysis frequently contained measurable concentrations of 100 to 150 PCB congeners. 

The classification procedure developed by Madron is based on the conversion, into the canonical form, of the matrix associated with the linear or linearized plant model equations. First a composed matrix, involving unmeasured and measured variables and a vector of constants, is formed. Then a Gauss-Jordan elimination, used for pivoting the columns belonging to the unmeasured quantities, is accomplished. Data concerning concentrations of phenol in ambient air are insufficient to estimate the potential for exposure by inhalation. However, it is known that the smoke of 1 nonfilter cigarette contains 60-140 g phenol, while levels of phenol range from 19-35 g in the smoke of filter-tipped cigarettes, and from 24-107 g in the smoke of cigars (IARC 1986 NCI 1998). Indoor environments polluted with tobacco smoke contain measurable amounts of phenol (Guerin et al. 1982).
