When the adsorbent has been introduced into the tube, the latter is fitted into a filter flask (see Fig. 77, 46, 2) to which a pump is attached the pump is run slowly and the column is again pressed down gently with the wooden pestle. Commercial diethyl carbonate may be purified by the following process. Wash 100 ml. of diethyl carbonate successively with 20 ml. of 10 per cent, sodium carbonate solution, 20 ml. of saturated calcium chloride solution, and 25 ml. of water. Allow to stand for one hour over anhydrous calcium chloride with occasional shaking, filter into a dry fiask containing 5 g. of the same desiccant, and allow to stand for a further hour. Distil and collect the fraction boiling at 125-126°. Diethyl carbonate combines with anhydrous calcium chloride slowly and prolonged contact should therefore be avoided. Dissolve 180 g. of commercial ammonium carbonate in 150 ml. of warm water (40-50°) in a 700 ml. flask. Cool to room temperature and add 200 ml. of concentrated ammonia solution (sp. gr. 0 88). Introduce slowly, with swirling of the contents of the flask, a solution of 50 g. of chloroacetic acid (Section 111,125) in 50 ml. of water [CAUTION do not allow chloroacetic acid to come into contact with the skin as unpleasant burns will result]. Close the flask with a solid rubber stopper and fix a thin copper wire to hold the stopper in place do not moisten the portion of the stopper in contact with the glass as this lubrication will cause the stopper to slide out of the flask. Allow the flask to stand for 24-48 hours at room temperature. Transfer the mixture to a distilling flask and distil in a closed apparatus until the volume is reduced to 100-110 ml. The Phillips process is a two-stage crystallisation process that uses a pulsed column in the second stage to purify the crystals (79,80). In the pulsed column, countercurrent contact of the high purity PX Hquid with cold crystals results in displacement of impurities. In the first stage, a rotary filter is used. In both stages, scraped surface chillers are used. This process was commercialized in 1957, but no plants in operation as of 1996 use this technology. [Pg.419]

Recovery of Ammonia. The filter Hquor contains unreacted sodium chloride and substantially all the ammonia with which the brine was originally saturated. The ammonia may be fixed or free. Fixed ammonia (ammonium chloride [12125-02-97]) corresponds stoichiometrically to the precipitated sodium bicarbonate. Free ammonia includes salts such as ammonium hydroxide, bicarbonate, and carbonate, and the several possible carbon—ammonia compounds that decompose at moderate temperatures. A sulfide solution may be added to the filter Hquor for corrosion protection. The sulfide is distilled for eventual absorption by the brine in the absorber. As the filter Hquor enters the distiller, it is preheated by indirect contact with departing gases. The warmed Hquor enters the main coke, tile, or bubble cap-fiUed sections of the distiller where heat decomposes the free ammonium compounds and steam strips the ammonia and carbon dioxide from the solution. [Pg.523]

An important variation of this filter is based on replacing the rigid outer waU necessary for containing the feed and the cake on the rotating table by an endless mbber belt. The belt is held under tension and rotates with the table. It is in contact with the table rim except for the sector where the discharge screw is positioned, and where the belt is deflected away from the table to aUow the soHds to be pushed off the table. The cloth can also be washed in this section by high pressure water sprays. This filter, recendy developed in Belgium, is avaUable in sizes up to 250 m, operated at speeds of 2 minutes per revolution, and cake thicknesses up to 200 mm. [Pg.395]

The scraper or knife discharge consists of a blade that removes the cake from the dmm by direct contact with the filter cake. It is normally used for granular materials with cake thickness greater than about 6 mm. In order not to damage the filter cloth, a safety distance of 1 to 3 mm between the blade and the cloth must be observed. If the residual layer is made not of filter aid but of the product, there is danger of its blocking by fine particles and by successive consoHdation by the scraper blade. [Pg.397]

A variation to the top-feed dmm filter is the dual dmm filter which uses two dmms of the same size in contact with each other and rotating in opposite directions. The feed enters into the V-shaped space formed on top of the two dmms and the cake that starts forming initially contains coarser particles due to the settling which takes place in the feed zone. This is beneficial to the clarity of the filtrate because the coarser particles act as a precoat. Erom the point of view, however, of the final moisture content of the cake the stratification of the soHds in the cake may lead to somewhat wetter cakes. Utilization of the area of the dmms is poor since there are dead spaces under the two dmms. The primary appHcation of the dual dmm filters is in dewatering coarse mineral or coal suspensions at feed concentrations greater than 200 kg/m. ... [Pg.397]

Barrier Phenomenon. In red cell filtration, the blood first comes into contact with a screen filter. This screen filter, generally a 7—10-) m filter, does not allow micro aggregate debris through. As the blood product passes through the deeper layer of the filter, the barrier phenomenon continues as the fiber density increases. As the path becomes more and more tortuous the cells are more likely to be trapped in the filter. [Pg.524]

Cell Activation. Several studies have shown that platelets and white cells undergo shape changes when adhering to filter media. The cells are activated by contact with the filter media and form pseudopods which attach to the filter media. The cells membranes may need a certain degree of viabihty to be able to actively attach to the filter media.
