Construction sites head protection

The most common use of personal protective equipment is for the protection of head, eyes, ears, torso, hands, and feet. This equipment helps to protect a person from damage normally encountered in an industrial plant, a construction site, or land renovation project. PPE includes devices and clothing designed to be worn or used for the protection or safety of an individual in potentially hazardous areas or performing potentially hazardous operations. 

The Hard-Boiled Hat, patented in 1919, was so called because of the steam used in the manufacturing process. The original Hard-Boiled Hat was manufactured of steamed canvas, glue and black paint. North America s first application was the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge construction site. This workplace had a problem with falling rivets, so it is understandable that head protection became necessary. 

The health and safety regulations make the main contractor responsible for the health, safety and welfare of all workers on the construction site. The main contractor must put in place a health and safety policy for each construction site and provide guardrails, working platforms, lighting, toilets, hand-washing facilities, first aid and site accommodation. There is also a duty to wear head protection on-site, including electricians. 

If head hazards remain after they have been assessed and controlled, provide employees with appropriate head protection for the hazards identified. Having all employees wear hard hats at all times while onsite is not a bad idea, since most construction sites have some head hazards no matter what precautions are taken. 

Head protection must be worn at all times. In all heavy construction areas, required foot protection includes steel-toe shoes with heavy-duty soles to help prevent crushing and penetration. Flaggers are on their feet most of the time, so their shoes need to fit well and be comfortable. Hearing protection includes earplugs or high-tech ear-muffs. For safety reasons, every worker should be able to hear the muted sounds of the construction site—and they should never wear headphones or headsets plugged into a music audio device. And don t forget a face mask for dust protection.
